Each team has a Star Hat player on track at any time (called a jammer). They get a point for each opposing blocker (skaters without a star) their hips pass.

The jam starts with jammers in a zone behind the blockers and having to fight their way through (the initial pass, no points scored).

First jammer out is "lead jammer" and has the privilege of calling off the jam at a time that suits them. Otherwise it runs to 2 minutes and then they start again.

It's a full contact sport, with some restrictions on hit zones (only shoulders and hips and body as weapons, no hitting to the spine or head or tripping people up)

I just pulled my mom out of a 10 year derby retirement to come back as a ref, we officiated our first game together on Saturday and she's turning 63 next year. I love how much room there is for unsporty people in roller derby
