this “practice self-care” mindset is a short sighted one that doesn’t work to actually solve any problems politically we face and it’s a mindset we need to move beyond if we want to change the world

one of the biggest failures in the democratic party is not pushing for policies that benefit smaller communities.
Republicans have a CHOKEHOLD on small businesses even though their policies negatively impact them, just because democrats have largely ignored small town industry as a demographic.
Worse, this is exactly the kind of mentality THEY want You to get. "Oh don't worry about what we are doing to others, just be mindfull and love yourself".
I stopped using Twitter because I was doom scrolling way too much, but now I'm realizing it's probably better to engage than pretend nothing is happening 🤷♂️
It's a dual threat with "go yell at a police-approved march until you feel better" of strategies that focus entirely on short term emotional benefit with no consideration for tangible action.
I resent you people making me look at his substack to see if any of your accusations line up, and after reading the full post, it's incredible how it's the exact opposite of your claim.
Piling on a dunk quote-tweet may be a good dopamine hit, but it's ultimately fleeting and feckless.
not just short-sighted, it's born out of an impoverished social landscape - faced with no community resources or even just basic compassion, one is left to one's own devices, and there's nothing left to do but "practise self-care"
It’s self pity, “oh no, we’re witnessing what we knew was happening for months” and helps them to forget they wholeheartedly supported a genocide that caused that goon to get into office
If the DSA wants to say one fucking word about where to go from here, they can start by unblocking everyone who called them out on their sheepdogging for Democrats first.
“Practice self care” is something one says to a grieving family member while their mother is placed on hospice. Practice self care, be strong for her, don’t fall apart because your life isn’t over; her life is over. It’s not a political strategy. It’s not a path to winning.
-me, 3 years from now when the entire atmosphere has been converted to an acidic cloud of sulfur and 99% of the US population is starving or in concentration camps
I love the mindset of someone who feels like it's their fucking place to give people permission to practice "self-care" thanks Jeff I guess I'll keep eating food and wiping my ass then
i know you believe that because it's in a quote-tweet where your years of scrolling has conditioned your brain to respond with ENEMY ENEMY ENEMY LOOK AT THIS DUMBFUCK
Agreed, politics are frustrating and stressful, but looking away from the problem dosen't make it go away. If we want change we gotta commit to it regardless of how dire it might seem. Nothing worth fighting for is ever easy.
So I looked at his substack to see if your description fits, and that post ends with "Remember, we’re all in this together. let’s be here for each other" and "Today, we rest. tomorrow, we put our shoulder to the wheel, and deal with the shitfuckery ahead of us."
So individualistic!
Encouraging mental health is the predecessor for strategic planning. A Resistance will require folks to be engaged, not drowning in depression or anger because both can be paralyzing.
oh my godddd they did this in 2020 too. individualism & complacency is why nothing is fucking changing ffs. ACTIVISM IS HARD WORK & ALWAYS HAS BEEN. IT IS NOT MEANT TO BE RESTFUL.
these are one of these things like mind-fullness which is a healthy coping mechanism in your toolbox of things to help when you're having a bad mental health day.
