When it comes to small planes and helicopters, it's, to my understanding, the latter. Commercial aviation (buy plane ticket, get in big tube) is very safe, but general aviation (these small, personal aircraft that keep crashing), according to some numbers, is more dangerous than driving.

I don’t have figures for this year, and obviously that DCA airliner crash was huge, but the rash of general aviation / small aircraft / tour helicopters crashing is kinda par for the course. They’re all notably more dangerous than driving.

Yup. One of my parents was a controller back in the day and these small planes are known to to ignore controller advice at times. She has a wild story about a skydiving plane dropping their passengers way too close to a delta flight after multiple warnings. Everyone was fine but... Yeah.

Small plane accidents were always this dangerous. We're hearing about it more because in the past we trusted the FAA and Dept of Transportation to do reasoned investigations and take meaningful actions that would actually improve safety. We no longer trust them.

This was a Cessna, not a commercial flight.

I wouldn't say they happen all the time but it's much much more common than with commercial aviation. It's rarely a major news story.
