There are good and intelligent people in red states too (spoken as someone raised in California and served as an educator and resident of Tennessee). Normally I like your posts, but try not to use a broad brush.
UHM AHCKTUALLY: The word Okay/OK came FROM the name Oklahoma during some political campaign forever ago that I forgot the details of, but learning that it came from the state itself is hilarious to me, so I remembered that.
Statement is still true. And Texans can't spell either (substitute teacher)
Oh, I thought you were going to say the kids can't spell "Burial ground for brown and black people who dared to pursue their happiness despite being cut off by white power brokers at every turn, then had the history of their struggle scrubbed from the books like a wheezing body in a shallow grave."
I grew up in Northern California education was good then 1960’ to the late 1970’. Then military school then college. Always learning these days the phone is all kids care about. Education has slipped away from most kids for years now they are parents who have kids with a education or meaning provide
I lived there for 14 years - not totally by choice. Here’s an example of Oklahoma’s lack of imagination: The capitol city of Oklahoma is Oklahoma City, which is in Oklahoma County.
Most of them can't even pronounce 'mediocre' much less spell it, and I'm an Okie! The only thing good about Oklahoma IMO is my adult children and grandchildren live here and the cost of living is cheap. I also like the rolling hills and the red dirt.
I'm from Missouri to show me state but that slogan has came in handy my entire life because I am very interesting of people unless I see it for myself and these days people really got to show you before you can believe what they say anymore
I was raised in Oklahoma. I have to report this is accurate. Luckily I chose to advance my education.
I left the state because it's over ran with maga.
Maybe other states should try this. Idaho might be able to attract psychoanalysts with the slogan "Idaho is Id." I'm not sure about "Illinois is Ill." And we need to think about how Zeus would respond to "Iowa Is Io."
Never thought I'd be ashamed of my state. We have some real pieces of s*** running this place. I was educated in the 70s and 80s. At least I can spell mediocre. 😃
No. Just had to pass through. I'm not a fan of Oklahoma, but geography makes it necessary to stop there occasionally. I could have driven longer, but that puts me in Texas.
Probably. But also, even that sentiment seems a matter of opinion. From what I've read about the place, Oklahoma is definitely not OK or at the level of base mediocrity. It sounds one colossally messed up, right wing, conservative, anti-democracy, anti-intellectual, Neo-Confederate snake pit.
Maybe they can’t spell “mediocre” but they should soon have 55,000 Trump-approved bibles (or should that be “buy bull”) for their public school classrooms.
I used to be indifferent about my American heritage. Anymore, I’m completely fucking embarrassed by it.
I feel badly for the children who are being left behind because they were born into hard working families who cannot get into private schools paid for by their hard working parents.
I loved this post and the comments! It made me feel like I’m not alone here. This state was much better years ago. Fox “News”, years of Republican domination and tightening of extremist religion’s grip have dumbed it down.
I just found out Mississippi's state govt is committed to providing "adequate" public education for its K-12 kids. And that, apparently, is an aspirational goal. Public ed is a national security crisis. Ask the people who administer ASVAB tests.
I graduated in 1985. Every year, our high school hosted a SLAVE AUCTION fundraising event. It was held during school hours and mandatory to attend. I recently tracked down our principal and asked him why he allowed this. He said “it was fun and no one ever complained”.
We're here because of elderly parents and the adult kids are now here... I like my school district (the district attorneys said the bible and 10 commandments mandate was not enforceable) and my hubs has a job he loves... hate the politics here...
yep it's a tough situation with elderly parents, I don't even live in the same country as my only surviving parent, it depends on how well they're doing.
I can easily imagine a world where in 2027 the "red states" and "blue states" are balkanized to the point of massive migration, be ready for that!
Lol I'm from ok, there are definitely some blunt crayons in the box. Our schools have been hard hit. We have an asshole spending millions to put trump Bibles in our schools. I was so hopeful when Harris was running.
Making fun of an entire state is not just immature, it demeans your own citizens. How would YOU like to be treated that way? This is why MAGA hates you, and you are just perpetuating the hate through statements like this. You cannot win them over by making fun of them.
You can't win them over ANYWAY. And like they love to say: the stats don't lie. Nearly LAST in education is a FAILING of the PPL to choose better LEADERS. I lived in Oklahoma for near on 10yrs, and they DID treat my home state 'that way' when speaking of it, despite MOST never leaving OK to 'know'.
OK would have blown away in the 30s if it wasn't for the Fed. Gov't. I know a place in OK where I used to see a WPA sidewalk. It's still in great condition, while all the surrounding sidewalks have been replaced. I dare not say where it is bc I'm afraid they'd tear it up in the middle of the night.
Well, to be fair, they are the victims of ignorant adults. The process starts at home. I feel sorry for them, really, for being unwilling participants in this backwards movement we see not only in OK, but in many other states. I hope the next 4 years will help us change for the following 4. 🙏🏻
OK is the testing ground for Project 2025. The ridiculous and wasteful legislation the state comes up with makes us THE most embarrassing state in the nation.

I left the state because it's over ran with maga.
Oklahoma is distinctly below average - way below - at nearly every indicator of life quality.
That’s really, really great!!
Laughed out loud!!!
Thank you.
That made my morning.

Mediocre is a bit too generous.
The only thing they are good at is trying to out "Florida" Texas.
Easy to spell, too. As if that would make any difference.
Sorry, I don’t make these rules.
I used to be indifferent about my American heritage. Anymore, I’m completely fucking embarrassed by it.
The State Motto should be: "Thank God for Mississippi!"
Claiming that kids attending college in the Cornhusker state think “N is for knowledge”
It's a long shot.
"At least we're not West Vurginia!"
But it won’t be anything they stand behind.
Bottom 10 in everything good and top 10 in all things shitty. Imagine that… Very fitting
Sorry I was raised in Oklahoma and I can’t help but correct you.
Remember this the next time somebody in your city/state/province decides to spend a little money on branding.
Fun fact: #Calgary is the #BlueSkyCity. But not today.
I classify it as one of the last places on Earth I would want to live

But.
Pretty spot on.
"Oklahoma, it's not that bad".
