I'm in the midst of the Legendborn series by Tracy Deonn and it's fantastic! Also just borrowed The Kindred by Alechia Dow from the library, so that's next on my list.
Raybearer duology
The maid and the crocodile
Death of the author
Vicious bonds by -Shanora Williams
Parable of the sower by Octavia Butler
The killing moon by NK Jemisin
There are so many books & I appreciate you asking. But itβs up to you to ACTIVELY seek books by black, POC& π³οΈβπ authors
Recommendations? Randall Kenan is my favorite, and has enough magical realism in several of his books to maybe interest you - especially Let the Dead Bury Their Dead and A Visitation of Spirits.
I just purchased Angela Y Davisβ Autobiography and 3 other books about Black revolution. Iβm really excited to get them. I also added some others on my Libby shelf.
I often recommend βPassingβ by Nella Larsen, as a fine book about a young woman making her way, which becomes a great book because you get to compare what it was like 100 years ago in NYC with how it is now.
I feel like if you had just stayed true to your name, we wouldn't be having this issue. But apparently, you woke up today and decided to make yourself a target. It's giving "all lives matter" and the eagle in your picture is making this even more hilarious.
The eagle is performative - I fully admit it. I get the "all lives matter" vibe. That was unintentional.
I'm replying to this only because all of us are facing the same assault on our rights. When it comes to a stand, we can't be making enemies among allies.
And idk what your ethnicity is, I'm assuming white, but I could definitely be wrong. But even if you aren't white, you're definitely taking a page out of the snow opossum playbook by centering yourself in a conversation that has nothing to do with you. βπ»
And how is a Black creator, on the first day of BLACK HISTORY MONTH, saying "read black books" making an enemy out of allies. Notice how she didn't say, "Anyone who isn't Black sucks donkey dick, never read any non-Black books ever, or you also suck." But that's what you saw for some reason. π
That accusation means you are guilty of the same crime you accuse me of. The content of the book means more than the identity of the authors.
May I recommend a classic book on how one of the world's greatest democracies created facisim? It is written by a cis white man named William L. Shirer.
You do see how the source of the book greatly impacts the content, right? Don't you think maybe that the perspective of Black authors might be lacking from our general knowledge base? Can't you see how that perspective is CRITICAL to any kind of progress in this country? WITHOUT IT WE REMAIN DIVIDED!
Yes. My point came off wrong. I'm happy to apologize. But the vitriolic response to it worries me.
You dont know me. I'm from another minority group that is also at threat. And it doesn't matter one whit which one. We are all under attack. We need to avoid creating divisions among ourselves.
I meant no vitriol in my response but your response to her comment tried to diminish her message in the same way many responded to "Black lives matter" with "All lives matter". There are very good reasons to specifically read Black authors.
Comments like these are exactly why Trump won. A lot of white left leaning people are only allies to themselves. Even when they vote blue, they still donβt do the work to deconstruct their anti-Blackness, racism, homophobia, & unconscious biases.
You are the problem instead of being the solution.
This is like responding to a poorly understood email. I hoped to reinforce your point and you jumped to the wrong conclusion. Then you attacked and jumped to a second conclusion.
The miscommunication has been explained to me, and I apologize for it.
Youβre right I should have phrased that better: stop arguing with Black creators when they tell you to read Black books. When a Black creator says to read Black books, saying βread all booksβ gives the same feel as responding to βBlack Lives Matterβ with βAll Lives Matter.β

Read books by black authors
Read books by queer authors
Read books by indigenous authors
Read books by Asian authors
There are enough books read daily by cis straight white men π

Let's not create more divisions.
BTW, started my copy of "How to be an Anti-racist". That's my book this month.
But I'd recommend "If Beale Street Could Talk". Everyone should read James Baldwin. :0)
