I think Shapiro is completely wrong here. Europe is not “necessary” only if aim is to cut & run at all costs. If the aim is to build & use leverage towards a good deal, then you do in fact need the bloc which is providing 60% of aid to Ukraine & which would provide key part of future guarantees.

He will demand the impossible and Zelenskyy will ultimately say no.

It is much diminished when all it has left is military power.
But I think he also underestimates the rupture that is occurring.
But the lesson Europe will take away will more likely be Gaullism plus than a commitment to be a more effective transatlantic partner.
