i always find this stuff kind of baffling--obama was a good candidate. he managed to do the same thing trump does: convince a fractious coalition that he can be trusted to advance their interests. the moderate wing of the democrat party has not produced a good politician in that sense for decades

Also worth noting that at that time Obama supported civil unions but not the right to marriage, which at least acknowledged the right of LBGT people to exist. The anti-trans movement clearly wants to eliminate them from public life.

What they want is a SCOTUS precedent declaring all sex discrimination is subject to rational scrutiny thereby allowing for broad regulation of people's lives on the basis of their sex (see Trump's sex definition EO). They see trans athletes as a foot in the door to achieve that.

Combine that information with what Roe V Wade meant beyond abortion and one begins to see the legal frame work to have a government claim ownership over peoples bodies if they refuse to follow whatever crazy rules are decreed..

I would also say that nobody questioned Obama's integrity and basic philanthropy. With Newsom I think we have to question those things based on his checkered record for instance on homelessness, new housing, remote work for state employees, and a lot of bills he has vetoed for political reasons.
