people using chatgpt so much they start to believe it’s god proves that in defiance of clarke’s third law basically any old bullshit is indistinguishable from magic

There's definitely people who are always looking for "signs" that give them meaningful advice and direction but then they explain it and it's like a deer that already lived in their neighborhood or a green light and you're like uh, what? That's not going to tell you how to live your life.
I just think of it like astrology. I'll admit that if I say "I hope I get this job offer" and a breeze blows by, it's just a breeze...but there's still an irrational part of me that's like "Yeah, but what if it isn't?"
I enjoy that irrational part...but I acknowledge it isn't rational or real.
My favorite of these so far is the guy that had an LLM generate a fake work team for him, and he immediately sexually harassed one of the subordinates it created
i always imagined the point when our technological reach began to outpace our collective intellectual grasp was going to be, like, when we invented time travel or immortality, not spicy autocomplete
So you are the one that I has to teach AI what empathy was! Apparently AI in the legal world has said AI is a person. I’m off to AI to figure out become Pinky now. But only if I can become a rat that talks. I really wanna freak people out.
My grandpa was telling the dinner table about this court case he found out about or whatever about this guy who had chatgpt tell him a bunch of "negative stuff" or whatever about his future (I didn't care to retain) and all I could really say was "wow that man is very threatened by predictive text"
To be fair, we kind of took being able to form meaningful sentences as a defining feature that only humans in all of creation can do. The thing that definitely, absolutely, separates us from animals. It is a wee bit of a novelty that there exists another thing on this earth that can do that now.
So very useful to know the name for this. There have always been charlatans ready to take advantage. The solution has to be to educate people. Religion and spirituality has primed people to look for supernatural explanations. Technology is ready to step in and exploit that.

I think the corollary follows easily:
“Any old bullshit is indistinguishable from magic if you’re a dumbass”
I enjoy that irrational part...but I acknowledge it isn't rational or real.

Oh my god, you’re going to cause so much inflation!
Someone will certainly make a lot of money out of it
