Think bigger. Think about the coming effects of climate change. Draw a line from just below the bottom of Wisconsin east. Then add in Washington, Oregon and California.
Now Canada has the majority of the U.S. GDP, all of the Great Lakes, large ports on both coasts, and direct access to Mexico.
We are also willing to allow Cascadia to join. And we will sign a free trade agreement with an independent Hawaii (finally freed from the tyranny of the Jones Act)
We are distinct peoples. Doubling or trebling our population would be annexation in a velvet glove. I never support territorial disassembly but if it must be the more politically liberal areas of the United States would make two or three fine separate nations, mutually supportive.

Actually, I’d rather go for New England as its own country. But joining Canada would be next place.

(Not that I'm taking any pleasure in that, but in terms of states deciding whether they might want to join with Canada, it's a compelling argument.)
