Let me see, $11 = £8.50.
£8.50 an hour???
UK min wage is £12.21
I found that difference shocking so I looked up the Louisiana min wage. It doesn't have one but adheres to the federal min wage which is $7.25 per hour - app £5.50
So this employer is being generous by US standards.
Makes you think!
there was another post down the thread saying that this was previously attempted in Alabama—with results similar to what happened in the UK when Brexiteers confidently predicted that folks in London would turn out in droves to pick fruit in the South of England. It didn't work out quite as planned.
To answer soberly, I don't think we're lazy. We just value our lives & have never been so desperate that we're willing to risk everything just to survive into next week. It's why the judgmentalism against immigrants is so infuriating.
Could be worse: after prostitution was legalized here, in the Netherlands, Govnt agencies tried referring jobless women of all sorts there, when they would otherwise have qualified for a social security income
Reportedly they thought is was ok; but of course, the women dependent on wellfare strongly objected, stating that no, prostitution was NOT just another job
A week has 168 hours. If you are working just 70 hours, you still have 98 hours off. So far, more than 50% time off. You can get a second job with such an amount of time off.
This is work Americans will not do. It’s been shown time and again. Americans would like other Americans to do this work, but no American wants to do this work themselves.
The privileged world the US and UK (fraudulent corrupt AHs) think they live in, farming is only for farmers & foreign pickers?! But we don't need foreigners due to fascist supremacist BS ideologies, FOFF???! 'Mum, can I have an apple?', 'Yes! Go and pick it like the foreigners used to do!' MAGA AHs
Along with “but nobody told us this would happen”though everybody told them and in this case Trump wrote the freaking plan down and published it ahead of the election.
Wall Street is not immune to this fwiw - look at all the “this will be AWESOME…wait WTAF with these tariffs?”. He did say. Often.
If Trump does as he promised, and he is trying, this is going to be way worse. I fear they are about to declare many many more immigrant workers dead, so they cannot use banks etc.
and SO telling that these guys who are allegedly so dangerous that they have no chance of parole are yet somehow not too dangerous to mingle, unsupervised, with the legislature. shameful.
As if they would deign to lower themselves to do that work.
Their thinking that work is for “others”.
Not them.
The reality is they will have to do it,
as there’s no one else around now.
They deported the “others”.
I bet you if you call these two places they have $16 an hour for you to pick blueberries. That’s still a job basically no white adult Americans would take, so OP still 100% correct, just highlights that American capitalism sucks for workers partly because we have so many vampires

“FOREIGNERS ARE STEALING OUR JOBS!”
“WHY ISN’T ANYONE DOING THESE JOBS!?”
what a name for God's Sakes. Headhunters for slave labor.
Courts put an immediate stop to that
It’s Brexit on steroids.
Crops will go unharvested. Or the labour costs go sky high and the produce costs a fortune.
More likely under Trump, chain gangs of “people that disagree with Trump” will be forced to do it as “criminals”.
Wall Street is not immune to this fwiw - look at all the “this will be AWESOME…wait WTAF with these tariffs?”. He did say. Often.
After the dawning realisation there was nobody to pick fruit after Brexit
Eustice launched a "Pick For Britain!" campaign in 2020
Which was quietly shelved in 2021 because no-one turned up
Then in 2023 wanted to bring FoM back 🤷
2023 - "Can have EU workers back please?"
"We need more EU workers, admits leading Tory Brexiter"
so basically agents gonna take a cut from a poverty wage

Americans all know you pick blueberries from the grocery stores.
And that's a beautiful store.
