The Penguin is really good, I’m glad I watched it, but my god am I fucking over the eight episode miniseries format. Leads to writing problems and pacing problems every time.

My wife is making me watch Lost for the first time and the pacing (I’ve only seen two seasons and heard it drops off) so far has been near perfect 🙌🏼

Agreed. Let the characters breathe. On the opposite end, please shorten documentary series. There is no reason to extend an 60-80 minute documentary to 4-6 episodes at 45 minutes each with filler.

I feel like there was a happy medium for a while in the early Netflix era where seasons were 12-16 episodes long and it was enough time to not have to rush without it being crammed with filler.

Like, LAW & ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT could tell a story about anything as long as someone would kill over it, and had a run of doing better bioengineering stories than Star Trek could, but the hook was sticking Vincent D'Onofrio's Goren in the middle of them.

I think either format's fine if the team is accustomed to the time budget. I first saw the 8-11 episode style in Japanese TV and love the way each episode can resolve while building toward the finale.

On the other hand, I could just watch Scrubs forever.
