From a realpolitik perspective America is the most unassailable country on earth. Two giant oceans, only land borders are with completely integrated friendly nations. No one has the capacity to move even a unit to US soil.

While money can be more efficiently spent, it is absolutely a vital expenditure. The US military hegemony has largely prevented a great conflict. When accounting for PPP and all of China's black budget military expenses and quasi military organizations, it's comporable to US spending

So the whole meme of the US spending more than every major nation combined falls flat and is more understandable. The US spending so much also subsidizes US defense firms, which makes them the most competitive on the market, which means for our spending nets back hundreds of billions a year

So while we spend more of a percentage of GDP than most of the western world it's less than our advesaries and gives us a lot of soft and hard power. Our budget is fucked because of debt, and shitty tax policies. There are functioning economies spending more as a percentage of GDP and are fine
