Not the point of the whole episode, but I’ve begun walking my kids to kindergarten in the morning instead of driving, and I completely get why you choose to cycle everywhere instead of drive. Love dressing for the weather, spotting birds, dodging cars, etc
I'm from a Sunday night Madeira cake household too! Is it because my dad was from Limerick? Not sure I know any other MC households in London. Will need to enquire further.
Black forest Gatto reminded me of the viennetta and my mum would always get the big block of Vanilla too 😭🤣 and I always think of your mum when I'm putting on the oven haha
Class episode. I hope rogue bike repairs start popping up.
Another angle completely is — I don’t know about the Portuguese — but the Spanish use of coca as a stimulant to increase the labour output of enslaved people.
Blindboy! I absolutely 💚 this episode. It’s my Sunday listening pleasure. As ever, you nailed it!! The BEST thing I’ve ever heard about cycling in Ireland. About our culture and the devastation wrought by shitty neoliberal politics. And cake!! You are a genius. A legend. Mo laoch. Never change.
1000%. My favorite episodes have been the history of bird shit for what a rabbit hole that one was.... or the one linking the Battle of the Boyne to Hennessy Cognac
The submarine was invented In Ireland, stolen by Fenians, they displayed it in a museum in New York to raise money for guns, an Italian baker saw the IRA submarine and was inspired to invent the sub roll that we now eat in Subway.Which Ireland refuses to recognise as bread and designates it as cake
My day is immediately improved.
I'm not sure if the average quality of podcasts is sliding downwards or is it that the blindboy podcast is so much better by contrast?
I hope the holiday was/is lovely.
Time is strange.
That’s very kind. the podcast market is saturated with shit that’s being made for the sake of it. Or to generate short form content for TikTok. I’m slogging away for the joy of making a podcast, around 8 years ago, all podcasts were like this. The market got saturated during covid
Loved it!! And I totally agree. I ride a motorbike across feckin Galway every day, and it’s the most present space I have. Every movement, every situation is considered mindfully. I arrive to work early, full of oxygen, and ready to start. Tried the bicycle this once, wasn’t ready for that. 😂
Love it! Madeira cake was our house too, and Black Forest gateaux was and is my favourite cake - and my mother’s - yet we almost never never bought it!
Regarding your double-puncture experience – a few years ago, after getting regular punctures on my cycle to work, I invested in some puncture-proof tyres and haven’t had one since. Not cheap, but saves a lot of time and inconvenience with repairs.
I lived in Tucson AZ and there are cacti needles everywhere, after suffering a few flats, I had Kevlar strips installed between the tire and tube. Rode for 10 years without a single flat from needles. I’m now running tubeless wheels with good results so far.
Just a heads up - there was a digitally inserted ad at the very beginning of the podcast for me. I usually only get them at the ocarina pause and at the very end. The Acast overlords are getting greedy.
Probably part of the enshittification of everything that’s going on. I only still use Spotify because my algorithm is a decade old and I can listen while I game with people online.
It really is. I mean, I could we can skip them and it’s just a minor inconvenience but I loved the ocarina pause and now we get no warning. Seemed like the ads were longer than usual too.
