My uncle was a doctor. Now he's retired and spends all day on Fox News. I've heard him express antivax and antimask views. Education is good, but it's not a sure defense against propaganda.
Education is essential and a great defense against misinformation and propaganda. The problem are leaders in power claiming that teachers are the enemy and lobbies controlling the mainstream media
I think boiling it down to “good”’or “evil” is reductive. Unfortunately we are at the point where Trump is popular enough that his supporter couldn’t mathematically be all evil and exist on a spectrum :(
You can't say you're not a criminal because you don't know a law as much as you can't say you're not complicit w/ someone you voted for because you 'didn't know him that well'.
Specially people who STILL supports him. Ignorance isn't an excuse.
The amount of people who tell me that their favorite class was history in high school is massively outweighed by the people who fell asleep during class.
I know too many people who do not know when their country was founded.
It really depends on how history is taught in class. If the students are taught to memorize, then yes it's boring as hell. But if critical thinking is stimulated then it becomes a very interesting class
LOL “2006” — that might as well be from 1906. Didn’t you hear? History 101 is just woke propaganda now, hence the incessant need to incinerate the dept of education
I can recommend two History books by Otto English for every UK history student, as others have mentioned you get the actual facts instead of the sugar coated nonsense you get at GCSE level. A level is not much better.
Same with my Computer science degree, in the second year, we started with, forget this stuff we taught you in the first year, this is how you really do it 😂
This is why I never used just one source for teaching students (middle school). Very 1st lessons students learned were about bias and how to vet sources. Class motto was, boiled down: "Learn from history, do better, be better."
I never forget how shocked I was to see most of my coworkers in upstate NY were so proud of Reagan & loved him
Knowing how corrupt, criminal & disgusting he was, I couldn't believe the level of ignorance about their own history (most of them actually lived through).
Sadly Bush&Trump outshined him!
Exactly, history is extremely important but a lot is left out, obviously you can't cover everything but pretty much all atrocities commited by the west are forgotten unless they were over 200 years ago cause at that point who cares
I used to work with people from India, one of them asked me about Iranian king "Mahmood the terrible", I had no idea until I realized we used to call him Mahmood the great, a bastard who used to raid India and loot their temples to pay for his wasteful lifestyle
Our education system is a joke... But I somehow soaked up enough history by zoning out in class and watching TV, at least enough to beat a lot of my fellow americans at "spot the dictator"
Let's stop making excuses, those stupid people also studied history. They know what they are doing, they like what they are doing. It's all deliberate.
Memorizing stuff for tests (or even cheating) doesn't mean you actually learnt anything.
I'm guilty of that myself (the memorizing part, not the cheating). I had some pretty bad history and math teachers - but I'm curious enough to seek out information on my own.
Too bad there’s no money for updated textbooks, the truth is considered DEI, they’re defunding the Dept of Ed, and preteens are cruel tyrants whose parents let them treat people horribly and they make their teachers cry & try to get them fired for actually teaching.
"Here's also all the the bad stuff the USSR and China did" (ignores the part where western countries do stuff as bad or worse during similar time period)
I loved this cartoon so much I asked Dan Piraro if I could include it in my history textbook. He agreed. We took the 101 off to make it more international.

Of smart, well educated people fall into Trumpism :(
Trump and his goons are evil.
You can't say you're not a criminal because you don't know a law as much as you can't say you're not complicit w/ someone you voted for because you 'didn't know him that well'.

“You know the stuff we told you last year? Well…..”
Just "reading history" doesn't mean anything if you teach them state sponsored propaganda.
Knowing how corrupt, criminal & disgusting he was, I couldn't believe the level of ignorance about their own history (most of them actually lived through).
Sadly Bush&Trump outshined him!

What we are seeing right now is the complete failure of the educational system with a big chunk of the world population.
I'm guilty of that myself (the memorizing part, not the cheating). I had some pretty bad history and math teachers - but I'm curious enough to seek out information on my own.
Not many people are like that.
No, people live in the socials (Facebook/Instagram/Whatsapp/X/BlueSky/whatever) and never look something up.
Or worse: they ask ChatGPT instead of searching...
