I worked at GS (EB Games here) and loved it. Could wear whatever we wanted, listen to whatever we wanted, we ran the place like a real local video game store. regulars, discounts, opening for friends/events, the works.

nobody should be friends with brands, but people love gamestop, and now its gone

scoff at gamestop at a corpo level all you want, a lot of people over the age of 25-30 prob have very fond memories of their individual, local store, and seeing the company exist now as a clearing house for stonks psychos, when it used to just sell video games, is very sad

Manager at a GameStop from 09-12. Shit absolutely ruled until the corporate dipshits made us do everything differently than we were previously. Even when we were working dumb hours its was hella fun.

I remember going to Funcoland before the GS buyout to get Vice City. My dad took me. They wouldn’t let me buy it without informing him about the content of the game.

“Are these real people?”
“No? It’s a video game?”
“Then why would I give a damn? Ring my son up.”

Making friends with the people at the GameStop in the mall clsoe to where I grew up was one of the best samll things that happend while I had a rough time in 7th grade.
Sad that experiences like that will probably become rarer.

GS/ EB games was great back home , used to go there like every time I was in town. I dunno if the company had changed by then or it’s just different here, but by the time I moved to the US it was just not the same and I was really sad to see it so … distressed, I guess.

I'm one of them with the fond memories and working when it was Babbages with dress pants and shirt and tie (tie lasted like a month...lol). My current local GS store has basically been the same for over 14 years; same manager, same feel. I still like it for what it is.

At uni we became pretty friendly with the staff at our local one, because we all liked games and buying stuff for cheap to try out etc. The staff at those stores always seemed cool to me, even as the stores got worse and worse.

I always wanted to work at EB but just never got the chance. From what I heard, it all depended on the nature of the store. Some stores I believe had a great vibe and were genuinely a strong team who loved video games and had a passion for it. Though, some were too sales driven and toxic.

As a former GameSpot employee, it was the best job I ever had. It felt more like a place we 'hung out' and employees had friends stop in all the time to chat even / look around. It was basically being paid to be a fucking dork and SOMETIMES work.

I loved it.

I live in a small Canadian city of just under 500,000 at their height there was 7 of them here now it’s 3 and two of those are in malls. That’s their destiny now just being that store in a mall full of funkos and used games.
