I don’t think the deregulation movement and subsequent hollowing out of the middle class would have happened without Carter - he was the beginning of a lot of these process that Regan became the figurehead for. Not a hero of the progressive movement.

What I find remarkable about Carter was his public penance for participating in the imperialist project. Was he a leftist? Of course not, but he did create space for moderate liberals to open themselves to more radical ideas and I think he was a baby step in my parents radicalization.

As for heaven or hell, I don't believe in any eternal damnation for anyone so whatever. I do think Carter is the most interestingly complex president of the 20th century. Was he a good person in the end? Can one ever atone for their actions as president? Idk. He tried to, but what is enough?

To be a little charitable to Carter he did seem to be the only president that after he left office took a long hard look at the consequences of his admins policies and it's failures, and genuinely tried to right some wrongs. Still did unforgivable shit, but he did do more to change than most.
