“Competent white men must be in charge if you want things to work. Unfortunately, our entire national ideology is predicated on coddling the feelings of women and minorities, and demoralizing competent white men.”
“Competent” white men don’t seem to be working out so well.
That's why they love "woke" and "CRT." The words have no real meaning except what they claim it means. Even words like socialism, which technically have a definition are debased in their hands.
And that the same rights have been extended, at least on paper, to every single person, regardless of their race, creed, or gender, regardless of age, legal status, sexual orientation, or disability.
They really hate all or some of that, as if other people having rights diminishes theirs.
shoutout to Samuel Moyn, dude who doesn’t quite fit that description but who is teaching history courses alongside Ross Douthat, and thinks liberalism has undermined itself to the extent that he would rather regurgitate the phrase “liberalism is in crisis” than acknowledge the times he’s living in.
"They may have ulterior motives but they're raising an important point" Was a line of reasoning which captured a whole lot of dipshit prestige center-left writers back when Rufo et al were winding up their "CRT" attacks. And I'd very much like to hear their sniveling excuses now.
It's that apartheid upbringing that begets this mentality. He and Sissy SpaceX have much in common. It's why the richest being on earth is trying to breed his own "legion" of kids...preferably male, with white mothers only.
"By the authority vested in me..." does a lot of heavy lifting on those EOs, doesn't it? A lot of the time he has no authority at all to do whatever he's going on about, it seems.
I look forward to hearing your thoughts on our current predicament. Your column will be hot off the presses tomorrow morning, yes? One can hope.
It occurs to me that Trump et al. will always have the advantage of timing. They're able to spring things, whereas we are forced to regroup at every turn.
I think of the title of Omar El-Akkad's book - One Day Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This. When hindsight condemns them they will sugarcoat, minimize, obfuscate, and outright deny their role in bringing us here.
there are of course multiple factions within Trump's coalition, but the southern resentment toward the federal government over civil rights and the outcome of the civil war became exported as well to rural areas outside of the south, and that progress is being specifically targeted, imho.

Both DEI and CRT were obviously meant to fill in for a derogatory term for minorities, usually Black people!
Not getting around the thirteenth amendment through mass incarceration. Not discrimination in employment. Not weird comments on the street.
They're not saying slurs in public, ergo not racist.
You're welcome.

Jeffrey Goldberg
His discussion re being on the board of META & realizing that DEI just doesn't "work" was fucking wild to me.
They really believe EVERYONE else is inferior. 🤮

At least I’m not calling myself a “Waymo Democrat”
3 weeks! I had to check a calendar to make sure that was a typo. it's honestly felt like 3 decades.
