It’s funny because I grew up as a Black kid during the 90s and if “people think we’re bad” was as determinative as it’s being depicted me and everyone I know should be dead by now.

I'm not black and not male; however, I do have a capacity for empathy and it is just such a shame that some people have to deal with daily all their lives others imposing a negative image on them. Every single day. This has got to be especially hard on kids who are unsure of identity.

It has felt like not my observation to make, but my thought in earlier permutations of this "pathologizing boyhood" discourse was that stereotyping/presuming young boys as innately dangerous/uneducable felt like another thing society had always done to *certain* boys and only became an issue...

I was born in 1961. They have ALWAYS thought we were bad. My mom graduated from "Decatur Negro High School". My dad escaped Jim Crow Alabama on a freight train. My paternal grandfather was half white. Until this country can effectively and TRULY deal with its racism, things won't change.

It’s so strange to see this discussion of gender with little if any reference to Black boys and young men, who have been seen as a problem for generations. “You’re bad” does not even begin the describe the ways we are seen.
