In my area, the nonprofit organization Active SGV (San Gabriel Valley) rents ebikes, including cargo bikes. There's a small fleet of bikes for loan to students at Caltech, coordinated by the main library. I recommend reaching out.

I'm an e-bike user. One of the things that disuades me from using it more for things like quick trips to the grocery store is no secure place to lock the bike. I have heavy duty ABUS locks but they're a bit unweildy. Here in AB it's highly unlikely the govt will provide any infrastructure, but...1/

could business/business associations be persuaded to implement something? Businesses have installed EV chargers as an enticement for clients to shop there. Why not secure bike locks? I'd happily bike extra KMs to get to a store that had something like this....

I caution against anything other than a standard “Sheffield stand” sunk into a foot of concrete. Anything cleverer tends to be too clever and won’t fit many bike designs well. But more well-anchored Sheffield stands, definitely.

Dutch biker here. I guess we have about a million bike racks in our country. Never heard of the “Sheffield stand”.

I agree that this design might not work for every bike, but perhaps it would accommodate most bikes. The issue I'd like to see resolved is a rack that incorporates a secure locking system. We've lost several bikes bc the locks are cut through with either an angle grinder or cable cutter.

And finally, I have every excuse to use an e-bike. Two health conditions that have earned me a handicapped placard that I refuse to use. I'm no hero, I just don't need it (yet). Ask me in an week after my next surgery.

I'm on your side, but I think we haven't ironed the bugs out of this.

It depends on local laws. Where I am a road legal e-bike is a 250W pedelec. If you can ride it throttle only the legal limit is 200W.
Of course you see people who are riding illegal bikes throttle only but they are a minority.
Personally I think speed limits are more important than power limits.

Petrol powered ones are illegal here. I haven't seen one since I was a kid, but I'm sure that there are some. Bikes and scooters are allowed on footpaths here in Queensland at 12 km/h.
The city council where I live is very car oriented. There is a lot of active transport talk but very little action!

Also,I have seen riders of many e-bikes styled to look like motorcycles and have removed the pedals (probably useless ) and have gotten a ticket for riding an unlicensed motorcycle, no plates, and no Motorcycle Drivers lic, no helmet, and riding where prohibited. Over $1000 in fines when caught

Los Angeles is starting to classify e-bikes by capability, and only 1 of the 3 classifications are allowed off street or in paths. This is a step in the right direction, but ;\locally, (Toronto) the police hate enforcing anything on the road, so the laws may be meaningless

Also there are many that would NEVER ride a bicycle but e-bikes are something they love. I contend that e-bikes, being powered, are actually motorcycles. Because of this what's to keep recognized motorcycles from bike paths and parks?

I understand that this is not in keeping with what many like. My issue is the faster speeds and less experienced riders combined with those that choose pedal only biles. Also bike-pedestrian conflicts are much more dangerous.

I don't disagree with this. But since they are powered vehicles, I don't feel that they have a place on bicycle infrastructure, including multi-use path systems in parks unless proof of human power is available and speed limits are imposed and enforced. Respectfully this is my opinion.
