To be honest, I was a bit disappointed. The book stays very superficial. I would recommend Jane Jacobs, and her great interpretators Jan Gehls 'Cities for People' and @charlesincities.bsky.social 's 'Happy City', for the same principles better explained and illustrated.

If changes in an area mean they become so popular that the area becomes really expensive should be an incentive to do similar changes in many more areas, so many people can enjoy the apparent value. Not do the opposite and do less of it.

Further marginalization of low income residents is definitely a concern, but I dont think it is unique to the 15-minute concept. Any big initiative with the potential to improve the desirability of an area is a threat.

It doesn't need to be this way of course, but measures to abate the problem would mean business interests couldn't generate the same level of profit off the backs of the politically disenfranchised, so into the meat grinder they go while developers count their dollars. Tale as old as time.

Amazing how '15-minute City' has been conflated by so many people with restrictions on travel rather than increasing opportunities with minimal travel. I rather prefer the narrative of walkable city.

Believe me, there are people who actually think that “15 minute cities” means being forced to stay in one’s neighbourhood. I’ve had arguments with them and they refuse to listen to reason. Never underestimate the capacity for stupidity in society. 🤦🏻‍♀️

The latest vote took place during Covid & very few people went to the polls - & we vote for our district mayors, who choose the mayor of Paris. She was elected by her peers, not by the Parisians.

I am in the midst of reading it, and I’m less enthused than you are. I find it to be far more about “Here’s how smart I was at this stage .. and this stage … and again” than about explaining to me what the 15-minute city is and how to get one.
