I don’t know. I didn’t order any clothing for me. 2 new sweaters for the dog. Some time saving gadgets for kitchen and bath. The prices are unbelievably low. Which is why I’m reserving judgement until I see the quality.

a) clothing isn’t usually lab tested, because those chemicals don’t just wander into a factory on their own
b) wouldn’t you want it to be if there was a chance the clothes were coated in mercury?

What lab testing? Not children’s products. Yes there should be FDA requirements around the kitchen stuff but the self-enforced regulatory state just ignores that; self-enforced regulation only binds people who want to be bound.

Most of the manufacturing has come back to NAFTA. Textiles is a very difficult industry, low startup costs, low technical knowledge needed, and well the previously mentioned labor issues.

I bought some socks from Shein during the pandemic because I wasn't able to get to the shops that I normally get them from and haven't bought anything from them since. I refuse to buy from Temu because their prices are too low so that indicates that something fishy is going on with it but they -

One big component of the price is shipping - and it costs less to ship from China than shipping domestically, due to some treaties. I sometimes buy things from AliExpress, and the shipping all the way from China is cheaper than domestic shipping.

I've ordered things from China (accidently) on Amazon and was never happy with the quality of the item, or the length of time it takes to get it as it's usually weeks, though the Shein order arrived promptly. I used to order from the US but I don't now because the cost of international shipping -

from there is often the same price as the item you're buying or costs more in some cases and there is also the hidden cost of customs so it's often not worth it even if the currency exchange rate is favourable. If the total cost is more than £30, or the shipping is more than the item, -

Might be more what I happen to notice than reality, but it’s weird how Japan-centric downtown Portland has become. Every new restaurant down there is some type of Japanese food, Muji is the only big kinda department store left…

My favorite clothing store is Kirikyo, which is I think just in Portland but sells imported Japanese clothes & textiles. Really pricey so only a rare treat or for Christmas, but soooo nice.
