Not sure who needs to hear this, most of the stuff that government does is because a) society has determined those services are valuable and are willing to pay for it, and b) there is no private sector model to do most of those things.

This is kleptocracy in action. Take essential and valuable services and privatize them even if it will be less efficient. Who benefits? Your buddies that will now control those services.
Trump admin = the intersection of oligarchy + kleptocracy + kakistocracy.
Also. There is this false narrative that private corporations are more efficient/ cost effective than government.
No. It’s not an apples to apples comparison. Plus the corporations have a profit layer in the equation. Plus they are legally required to maximize profits for shareholders.
Government workers tend to be there for more than the paycheques investing long term in the mission of the agency (health/safety/impartiality) and government agencies have to meet accountability requirements corporations don’t. #doingItRight
Ostensibly, the idea of the NWS is that no matter how rural, you will get the same quality of forecasts/warnings as any other location. A private, for-profit model (which exists) will ultimately prioritize people/places that have the capacity to pay more. Seems bad.
Right. Not just weather, but roads building/maintenance, airports, schools, food safety, clean air/water, law enforcement, fire protection, air traffic control, and so much more. No country delegates those things to the private sector for obvious reasons.
And basic science as well. The NIH and NSF funded research over the past several decades that has literally changed life for humans. They work would simply not have happened if left to the private sector.
(Canada actually DOES do private ATC, but it's a nonprofit. Italy too I think. FAA outsources a bunch of ATC contracts here in the US but it is not going great, see e.g. San Carlos -- you have to pair it with adequate regulation & funding and we're not awesome at that here in the USA)
It's not a "would be", it's an "is". A large fraction of ATC is currently outsourced. They meet the same qualification standards and many of them do excellent work, but there's an enormous nationwide shortage of controllers - many of them are hugely overworked and underpaid.
The irony may be that one person’s “budgetary waste” is another person’s subsistence quota allotted by the democratic order. The “shock and awe” crew purposely preconditions us by saying they are targeting budgetary waste and excess before even examining the system — a manifestly corrupt power ploy.
Taxes and functional, fair and honest government is the cost of being civilized and the benefits we get. Infrastructure, healthy food, water, air, public safety, education, etc. the model for the other guys and gals us Lord of the Flies

they’ve never had to think about them harder than that
