The obvious answer for my time (mostly post 2006) is what if we had kept Cespedes, but I'll personally go with "What if we had managed to sign Beltre or Furcal". Not sure it was ever actually possible but it would have helped a lot of questions about signing and provided a lot of fun

We'd already gotten one and a half big arms! Samardzija was good though admittedly Hammel immediately turned into a pumpkin on arrival. He specifically wanted Lester, and Lester was pretty good. Just one of like 20 what ifs in my mind about that cursed 2014 season that I will take to my death bed

I’m not sure they hold off the Angels even if they don’t make that trade, and by making it they went into to the postseason with proven clutch guy Lester, and Kazmir, Shark, and Sonny, who were all having career years. Survive that WC game and it’s likely they go deep that year.

Oh, I don't disagree about their regular season collapse, but they went 22-33 from August 1 to season's end. They certainly *could've* run the table in short series, but I don't think it was particularly likely
