Oldman did all the Mike Leigh stuff: he went to New Orleans, went to the Bronx. To his schools, and so on. I think got someone to improvise with him as his mother. He’s barely in the movie but he vibrates exactly like Oswald did.

When Gary Oldman played Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK, he begged Oliver Stone to let him film a monologue in character-- pretty much unloading his research into the part. This unburdening went on for sixteen minutes, none of it went into the film. Apparently it's archived somewhere.
