Julia Childs once did a program on this that my mother told me about. I guess it was funny, but also inspirational as she was pulling things from her refrigerator.
I've discovered some of my favorite soup recipes this way. A surprisingly large amount of things taste great in soup so long as you have a good broth as the base. It really helps teach you the effect of various individual ingredients, too.
