So good, during all of his smoke and mirrors I had failed to dig deeper than my knee jerk response to his pathetic endeavor. Thank you for this....I will be sharing broadly. ❤️
America is a geographical demarcation and that is a geographical map.
Greenland is in America, it is owned by an European country, French Guyana is also in America, it would be ridiculous to sat it's in Europe
☝️ All democratic world works hard to increase US ability to protect democracy.
🛑 Once a day, one a man becomes a President of the US... and decided that all democratic world owed him.
📌 He understands that democratic world will newer hurt US (not him).
As an American, I feel I can confidently say this ignorance only applies to Americans. The rest of the world seems to understand they aren't the center of it.
I keep having to tell people this. Embarrassing that people here don’t know their own nation and they named that gulf after a couple continents. But-we are were we are because over half down here are too dumb to know the difference
Actually it's not. According to the 1901 supreme court ruling in Downes v. Bidwell Puerto Rico is owned but not a part of the United States. This ruling has never been challenged
By 2048, rising sea levels caused by climate change had swallowed up Hawaii. By 2052, Trump Jr. was selling "From Woke to Wet" scuba adventures to the formerly above-sea level island chain. In 2054, Jr. met with what was ruled an accidental death when his 7th wife shot him with a harpoon gun...
Her only public comment on the event came in the form of a one-word tweet: "Oops." She would go on to marry Elon Musk's cryogenically preserved head some years later.
And on the east side of the Atlantic, Scotland is not part of England. England, Great Britain and the UK are not the same things. Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain but is part of the UK.
Most countries in the world wrongly refer to the UK as 'England' including, bafflingly, the Irish.
It's not in the names of those countries, though. The United States of America is the name of the country, we aren't going to call ourselves the whole thing, United States of Americans. Makes no sense. United Staters? No. Besides, we called it! 😄
Sorry, but you're wrong.
Wouldn't that make you a United Statesian?
I'm not an American, but you have me living in America.
BTW, I'm Canadian, I live in Canada.
It's United States of America and we just shorten it to America. We know that America encompasses both North, Central and South America. But it's not wrong for us to use America as it's a word in the name of our country.
Tell the British from 1700 that. That’s about when the convention began. Sorry, I’m American. I’m from America. And people from other parts of the Americas aren’t Americans. People need to just stop trying to steal identities and be happy being who they are.
Except…. now it is wrong!!!
If the USA are not respecting other countries borders and are threatening to take over other nations then other countries need to distance themselves from them in absolutely any way they can.
So under your theory the state of Georgia should be renamed, as should the towns of Paris, London, Berlin, etc, in America. We shouldn't call the region of New England that anymore? It's just ridiculous.
What do we call Russia now and Israel since they are actually invading other countries?
They do refer to themselves as Mexican, Canadian, etc. and are correct. Referring to yourselves as Americans is wrong. To refer to yourself as someone from “The States” is more Geographically correct.
Is it ridiculous? Trump doesn’t think it’s difficult, look what he’s trying with the Gulf.
No, people who aren't American refer to us as "from the States" we have, since the end of Civil War referred to ourselves as America and Americans. It's the name of our damn country!
Trump's an idiot, are you one of his followers who thinks it's just fine to change names of things that have had
those names for centuries? No, the name of our country is the United States of AMERICA and we are Americans and if you don't like that it's a YOU problem.
I despise Trump and all he stands for. I can’t believe what’s happened to the USA. I’m horrified he was voted in. I won’t return there till he’s gone. I won’t refer to you as American either. From here on in you are from the United States. I’m with Canada, Mexico and every other country in America.
Not to mention saying "USain" or whatever the push is to say now doesn't make sense. I'm an "American" because the country name is the United States of America. Not the US. This push to shorthand everything is ridiculous. Like National Geographic to "NatGeo" it doesn't even make sense to verbalize.
To be fair, National Geographic only became NatGeo when they came out with a TV station of their own, due to the limitation at that time on "call letters".
AND we were ORIGINALLY called "America". We weren't called "United Stated of America" until AFTER the Civil War.
As someone coming from the piece of land known as Central America, arguing about this subject with people up north always ended in futile and pointless discussions. I eventually gave up and they can call themselves Americans for all I care.
😂Cyb3rManiak, if you are serious, I'd say read about how elections work and then let's chat. If you are just anger posting, or whatever you kids call it these days, know that it is a nuisance, just like the Karens you talk about, and will lead to blocking.
Kinda the opposite, literally anyone do not care what continent they are apart off except Canada. They hate their own continent with a burning passion for whatever reason, people would rather use continent other than country when saying where they are from. So yes the opposite.
I'm sold ... Can we now move on to the important subjects like fighting a Fascist Government trying to silence the opposition and deport who they deem undesirables?
The average U.S. citizen is unfortunately too ignorant for those maps to even mean anything - a significant percentage couldn't ID the U.S. on the left map without labels.
That said, the true 'Gulf of America' lies between the manipulated and brainwashed Trumpists, and everyone else.
What kind of English are we learning? It is proper English? Legal English? Or slang English? I really want to talk like they did back in Shakespeare’s Day!
The Americas... North, Central and South. North America contains the U.S., Canada our lovely neighbors to the north and Greenland which most Americans don't even know is part of the continent because of our lovely public school system. That's why our "new" dipshit president thinks he can "Annex" it.
I am in sympathy with your intentions. But (as is often the case) I don't see Hawaii in the right-side picture. (Granted, Hawaii was STOLEN and annexed by the US gummint back in the late 19th century.)
Alaska has some words to say about that too. First Russia took it. Then it was bought. I’m buying my own island and leaving for there as soon all the germs blow over
Yes I know, but we in the United States of America have been saying “I’m an American” forever because not shortening it makes no sense. Technically we aren’t incorrect as long as we know, as you point out, the as Americans from the USA we are part of a much larger area known as “The Americas”.
But you knew it was America as in the United States of America, yes? At some point you were taught the existence of the Americas? It was barely touched in my school years but I think it was part of what they called The Explorers.
Thank you! I was born in Colombia, lived in Argentina and the US. When people from this country ask me when I came to America, I tell them that I was born in America and have lived in America all my life except for the year I lived in Spain. I then give them a quick geography lesson.
this is why i dislike the term "american."
the white guys from the 18th century named the country the lame name, so we should go with it. not american.
ALSO its like saying "mexico of america" imo. its "country of continent." its not consistent and it bothers me
I think there might be some islands missing from that second photo. And I don’t know anyone who lives in Canada or Mexico who says they live in “America”.
I agree with your point, but you don't offer a solution. Just what do you nickname a country called "The United States of America?" (Especially since we aren't united.) Don't try "Yankees;" it will get you shot in the South.
In the Latin American vision, you are Americans. Sorry. I agree that you’re not. And that Peruvians aren’t Americans, etc. But that’s what they say in Latin America. I lived in South America for a year. They are VERY touchy about this subject.
That may be because you (wisely) didn’t call yourselves the Canadian Provinces of America.
We however, are stuck with USA or the United States of America.
Agreed, although I don't think we were thinking that far ahead. I give credit to the framers of your Constitution that did see this coming.
Unfortunately, they couldn't have imagined our media & social media bombarding citizens with disinformation nor the level of ignorance of so many citizens.
Denizens of the United States refering to themselves as American is so on brand for that particular country.
No nuance
No awareness beyond its borders
No consideration of other countries in the same geographic area
So entitled
So lacking in self-awareness
So...American 🤷🏻♂️
Canadian here.
We learn that there are 2 Americas - North & South America.
Don’t ever call me an American. I am Canadian. I also come from North America, not ‘America’ (that would imply I’m an American).
I’ve learned that different countries teach this notion differently, which is interesting.
No. You will be taught that black people came willingly to this country to better their lives and that they are inherently “lesser” beings not capable of higher thought or action, which is why they are enslaved. They will erase all of our past crimes and commit them again.
Back when I was in school, they use to teach this at the Americas and why it got that name. North America, South America, and Central America. Too much fake patriotism and not enough real education.
I learned this one the hard way. I was in Chile hanging out with a group of young people at night, and the girls asked where I was from. I accidentally said America instead of the US.
They got quite pissy and said, "we're all from America." I was quite embarrassed.
This discussion is a waste of time, Mexico is United States of Mexico, we call it Mexico, United States of America, they call it America, no big deal, in English the continent’s name is The Americas 🤷🏻♂️
Pedantic. This whole push of "America can't mean the US states" is incredibly dumb. Words can have multiple meanings. You can figure it out based on context.
I think his point is, if you say you are 'from America', it really doesn't narrow it down that much as it's almost half the landmass on Earth and does not just mean the US.
I'm Ojibwe Indian.I AM American! I was born in the United States. So when someone slaps you for your ignorance, don't be surprised. They will be a Native American Indian! 🤭🐟🪶
Since moving to Belize, I make a point of saying I am from the U.S., rather than saying I am American. Most people will accept the latter term, but I try to avoid it, since it is rude. There are lots of Americans in America Central, and America del Sur who are not from the U.S.
Been saying this for years. I’ve never appreciated one country co-opting the name of the American continents as their identity. I’m Canadian and don’t refer to myself as a Canadian American. The title that should be used in the US is to either identify with your state or maybe United Statesian?
This is totally correct information, but I fear that the intended target audience might read it to mean the opposite of what it means. “THat’S rIgHt!! SeEEeEeeE?!?!? ThIs mAp sAyS wE OWwwwN aLL oF it!”
Thanks, but we are well aware of those continents. When people, especially Europeans, write “America” it is as an abbreviation of “The United States of America” NOT because we don’t know the difference.
You forgot Hawaii. This Alaskan would have been happy to be forgotten/missed/left out as well. When I travel, if asked where I am from, I just say that I am from Alaska and explain that it is between Russia and Canada. No need to involve the US in international personal relations… Especially now!
Comments
Only geographically Greenland is America
Greenland is in America, it is owned by an European country, French Guyana is also in America, it would be ridiculous to sat it's in Europe
Go ahead. We’ll wait.
🛑 Once a day, one a man becomes a President of the US... and decided that all democratic world owed him.

🤬🤢🥵🤮👹 Crazy that Trump destroys friendship...
There is a difference. Guam and American Samoa have similar designations.
Most countries in the world wrongly refer to the UK as 'England' including, bafflingly, the Irish.
Born in US = Usian
American and north american means something different
That would likely triple our population, absolutely flooding our electoral system with people who are - by and large - right of center for us.
We've got enough problems without adding a bunch of entitled Americans to it.
If you want to be Canadian, put the work in and immigrate.
Yeah, more than quadruples our population.
Canadians would be VASTLY outnumbered by the MAGAts in those states.
No thanks.
🇮🇪🇪🇺
I'm fine not claiming to be "American." Love it or hate it, people know what that word means. The USA is welcome to it.
Wouldn't that make you a United Statesian?
I'm not an American, but you have me living in America.
BTW, I'm Canadian, I live in Canada.
Which I only mention because, as an Anglophone myself, I find the way the world view changes from language to language fascinating.
If the USA are not respecting other countries borders and are threatening to take over other nations then other countries need to distance themselves from them in absolutely any way they can.

If they're pissed off about the Musk/Trump admin they should make up names for THEM not for us.
AND we were ORIGINALLY called "America". We weren't called "United Stated of America" until AFTER the Civil War.
3rd world countries have better life expectancy. Life to work balance. Less infant Mortality.
🇮🇪🇪🇺
But it is still wrong. Always has been.
Seems like only a country of Karens could let that happen...
The president renamed the Gulf of Mexico.
That's classic Karen behavior.
There's a reason the most powerful (and most stupid) Karen of them all is for Fellon47 - Marjorie Taylor Greene.
You might not be a Karen. But you've definitely let one get power over you.
Short nick name >> America.
Explain…cuzz I googled the question, and it said USA is America.
United States of Americans
I do not think the states are united than other than sharing germs
GAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!
The full name for Mexico is United Mexican States, but we call it Mexico for short. The same with the United States of America, America for short.
Sorry.
That said, the true 'Gulf of America' lies between the manipulated and brainwashed Trumpists, and everyone else.
note that in latin america, it's still referred to as america
Since the beginning of time until 1898.
In the english language, the accepted demonym for “someone from the USA” is “American”.
The combined landmasses of North and South America are known as “The Americas” not “America”.
The fact of the matter, if you speak english, the word “american” literally means “a person from the USA. Geography or not.
And like I said, the combined landmasses are called “The Americas”. Not “America”
Everyone says Geography is not something your people know. You are the living proof.
I would add: no History either.
Crazy, different words in different languages. Who would have thought 🙄
Gringo burro.
I’m a Canadian.
🇮🇪🇪🇺
This wasnt some political "their ours" take... the whole point of the original post is how USA doesnt own all of america.
Am I a United Statesian?
USA: 3 letters
I’m Canadian BTW

The US co-opted the name 'Americans' & as a 🇨🇦, we are happy to not be associated w that name.
A few months ago, we may not have reacted as strongly.
We however, are stuck with USA or the United States of America.

Pay attention.
Everyone speaks about Africa like it's a country. It's a continent, a big one, with lots of countries.
"Bla bla something something Kids in Africa" is a prime example.
Not kids in Congo? Kids in Egypt? Kids in South Africa?
It's a huge continent!!!
They got quite pissy and said, "we're all from America." I was quite embarrassed.
United States of Americians? United Statesians?
or alternatively Central North America
🇮🇪🇪🇺
Happy ?
~United States of Americans

Those are North America and South America. We're the "United States" of those.
They could've all included it in their names too.
