Lol the way that publishers just expect you to do this through magic intuition and with almost zero guidance (or by throwing money at the problem) is wild. Like, in what world was I supposed to have acquired that skill?
I have done this each time with mine and I absolutely loathe it. Will likely have two to do this year and am already dreading it. I just can't justify the fees to get someone else to do it even if I'd like to think my time is worth more (it probably isn't)!
I would rather give every single royalty dollar I will ever see from a book to someone who knows how to do it well than even attempt to index a book I wrote (especially since it always comes at that moment when I’ve never been more over and emotionally done with something)
I have done every job around serious nonfiction, all the research, developmental editing, copyediting, fixing footnotes, press releases, marketing plans, yadda yadda. (I like doing that stuff.)
The one line I draw: I will never create an index for a book. Life is too short.
