Rewatching The Abyss for the first time in probably twenty years.
I liked it first time around, but I had forgotten just how good it was. Such a brilliantly paced action / disaster movie that doesn't suffer for it's high concept.
It is amazing how well this movie stands the test of time.

The performances are perfect too, I dare say it's a better 'crew under pressure while military types screw things up' film than Aliens is.
Aside from a very occasional comp screen shot showing it's age, most of special effects are simply astounding for when they were produced. This thirty-six year old movie has better special effects than many modern movies.
The reason it looks so good is that much of it was shot for real, in submerged sets. The documentary on the 4k remaster is well worth a watch if you can.
Yes, they really don't try to explain anything, just roll with it. It's the better ending for what has just preceded it.
I know it might upset some folk, but I think it's easily Cameron's best film.
