Hey, question for y'all.
Say it's Monday, and you hear "next Friday". What comes to mind?
The Friday that's coming next? Or the Friday in the next week?
I wish we had polls here. XD

I guess I would assume the Friday this week unless I know that person uses it to mean the coming week.
I would use Next Friday to mean the coming week since saying Friday, meaning the Friday this week, is clearer.
(Sorry if I sound like a prick with the way I said that, I unfortunately can’t really think of any other way to convey “please just be clear”)
Next Friday is the Friday of the following week (potentially), but "the next Friday" would be the next occurring instance of "Friday" which would always be this week's Friday (except if it's Friday)
This week: “Let’s see a movie Friday.”
Next week: “let’s see a movie next Friday”
"Next Friday" is next week.
If it's the upcoming Friday then you'd say "This Friday"
Next is the upcoming day for me personally by default.
This Friday/this coming Friday = Friday that comes up next
Next Friday = Friday of next week
One could argue semantics for the 1st, but it'd be wrong in almost all cases.
"Next Friday" = the Friday of the next week
This Friday, is the Friday at the end of the current week.
this Friday: Friday of the week we are currently in
Only time I think there's an exception is if it's Saturday or Sunday, you're allowed to say "Next Friday", because "This Friday" could be used to refer to the previous Friday, instead of "Last Friday"
Next Friday is next week.
If it was the week, id say "this Friday"
For the imminent Friday of the current week, I would understand "this Friday".
Given how varied people tend to be with it, I always end up asking for clarification.
And polls would be lovely, aye.
Friday coming next would be "this Friday".
"No, that would be THIS Friday"
If I said "We can fix this on the next shift" would you think I mean the the first shift of next week, or the next shift this week?
Although I've had the different ones bamboozle me, so I ask the date of the day in question. Much more secure.
The Friday of the current week would be "this Friday"
If it's said on a Saturday I would be less certain and just ask what date if needed.
As in the next in line.
That week, “We'll meet on Friday, yeah.”
That week, “We'll meet on this Friday, yeah.”
Next week, “We'll meet next Friday, yeah.”
Bonus week, “We'll meet on a Friday, yeah.”
Bonus week, “We'll meet that Friday, yeah.”
Trunks week, “We'll meet last Friday, yeah.”
Every single time
Because when I thought about in in German, I immediatly thought of next week's friday - with "this friday" meaning this week.
Huh. Odd that.
Like if it’s April 20th, I see “Next Friday” as May 2nd, but someone who thinks tomorrow is the end of this week might mean April 25th
And yes, this needs to include polls for sure 👍
Friday of the current week usually gets called "this Friday."
If it's Monday and they want to talk about THAT Friday, then they'll just say "Friday".
Or at least that's how it works with me.
ie. the 2nd?
Tho if it was Sat or Sun then it would be the next immediate Friday, Monday is the specific cut off for this as I see it
But I'm British, so my dialect is the linguistic equivalent of Bethesda game code.
