James Earl Jones was wrong to sign off on this.
I repeat: He. Was. Wrong.
You can disagree. Think I'm disrespectful for disagreeing with him. Think that this is a way to "immortalize" him in this role.
You are wrong.
He was wrong.
This is fucking terrible.

The new Darth Vader AI in Fortnite uses James Earl Jones’ voice, recreated with AI.
His family says: “James felt that the voice of Darth Vader was inseparable from the story of Star Wars & he always wanted fans of all ages to continue to experience it.”

THEN LET SOMEONE ELSE DO THE VOICE.
FUCK
What Jones did was completely unnecessary & just added fuel to the AI taking creatives fire.
However much like what Nickelodeon did with Spongebob; fuck the wishes of the dead.
It makes none of this better, and he should've known better.
But now, they'll never bother casting another Brock Peters for stuff like this, and that sucks.
James made the wrong call on this.
As far as I'm concerned, when Jones died, Vader went with him
And just because Jones was okay with his voice being used to train Gen AI doesn’t mean that we should all suddenly pretend like this isn’t absolutely awful to listen to.
It is REALLY messed up that now it's being made into a toy, and that people can make it say whatever they want. It's very disrespectful to the man and his intentions.
I don't think he made this choice, but his family chasing money :/
I really don't think he himself did even sign it off
ie: does this use still fit what he was envisioning?
Or more bluntly a 'this is why we can't have nice things' moment.
This sets a precedent. Your being is now for sale - beyond the grave. Nevermind publishing material after the creator’s death, now the creator is an undead puppet of Capital, sold to the highest bidder.
What do you mean we could've paid tens of thousands of actors what we poured into this? They'll want residuals!"
I imagine he's cheaper, too.

Search your feelings. You know it to be true.
I dont think he really thought about the greater context or implications it has for other actors.
I agree he was wrong, but I like to hope it wasn't a malicious choice.
Doesn't make much difference but eh.
not this.
This only allows them to cheap out and not have to hire anyone to do VA for the voice again
Going forward though, I’m with ya.
rather than let someone else have a chance i guess...cant help but feel a stain in the "legacy" now
That he "signed off" on it is immaterial; how much does any 90+ year old really understand about AI and its implications?
Or by continuing to push the regulations against "AI" until it becomes useless for purposes like this since it's continuing to just be a glorified theft machine.
Or we storm the server locations with squirt guns full of salt water.
Do you really care for him if you "respect his decision" to get his voice used in potentially horrible ways?
(He was still WRONG to do it, but a clarification does need to be made.)
