Hetfield talked about it on Stern a couple years ago--I believe it was even originally called Crib Death. There's a live performance in the studio where he references it as well.
well, how come when i play the drum part of it i feel like a god! everyone has a dark side think about your own! maybe 61 but still a badass behind my kit!
Not true.
Google will set you free.
“Lyrically, the song is about "nightmares and all that come with them", according to Chris True of AllMusic. The title is a reference to the sandman, a character from Western folklore who makes children sleep.”
Not true. As several Metallica fans have already pointed out,the original lyrics weren't used since the song was unliked by everyone except Hetfield. Its about nightmares.
It was, when they started the writing process, but Bob Rock and Lars Ulrich convinced James Hetfield to change the subject to child’s nightmares. The actual lyrics are not about SIDS.
Can you please share your sources? Everything l can find on line says it is about a child’s nightmare. Wikipedia means crib death in passing but as an early concept not the songs foundation. Thanks.
James Hetfield once did a voice on an American Dad episode of mine and I told him that “Enter Sandman” was my 10-year-old daughter’s pre-soccer game psych song, which I assumed was *exactly* what he’d been thinking when he wrote it.
He smiled, then growled: “Infecting the minds of America’s youth.”
Hetfield was great to work with. Sang an “off to never-never land” joke that his reps warned us about putting in the script and gave the biggest laugh to a divorced guy joke at the table read. I became a bigger fan.
I also saw him be incredibly nice to a flight attendant on a Southwest flight once.
Only ep of American Dad I ever watched introduced me to My Morning Jacket - one of my now fave bands ever. Never watched again cause why mess with perfection?
There’s a divorced dad at the water polo games who I was going to do but then gave it to an actor friend of mine (which he knows I kind of regret 🤣) But we did base the character model on me.
yeah i noticed that's sort of a thing in AD. Fusfeld Motors, Klaus's last name being Heisler and there's a Keith Heisler on the crew....amongst many others
Ok so I looked it up and the original lyrics was about SIDS but the lyrics were changed to what they are now today about a child being manipulated by adults to have nightmares.
I’m not saying using ai is right, in fact I’m very much against it. I just thought you kinda came off as a jerk. Which search engine would you recommend?

Although this sums up (looks around at everything).
“Enter Sandman” by Metallica is a song about the fear, trouble, and sleeplessness that can come with nightmares.
