There's a great explanation for why Democrats don't pursue tariffs: they're bad for pretty much everyone, except maybe whatever domestic industry they support (which may not trickle down to the workers).

Everytime I see someone post "those dastardly unions saying something nice about a Republican policy!" if you look at the actual policy it's something the union has asked for and for good reasons that the Democrats don't have a particularly good explanation for why they don't deliver.

The only problem is people start asking "Wait, why are you cutting auto workers fat checks and not me?"
Is that as economically efficient as handing over cash? No. It's a lot more politically palatable, though.
Only good arg I’ve seen for them is that they’re sometimes the easiest (only?) way of collecting revenue for poor countries. Which doesn’t apply to the US lol
