If you think of a social networking site as a big party and make your standard for being kicked out "is this person only here to make things worse for a bunch of the other guests" then it isn't really very complicated at all.
Is it good to think of a social media platform as a big party?
Presumably if there is resistance to this simplification it’s because the platform needs people who don’t agree with each other to participate in the same forum; where that line gets drawn, I don’t know but I get why it’s hard to draw
Maybe there's an alternative to banning. Some video games started putting cheaters solely into lobbies with other cheaters.
You could do the same with assholes--assholes can only see and be seen by other assholes. They're not banned, they just have their own party to go to--and stay out of ours!
Except part of the reason people want him gone is because Jesse is deliberately circumventing measures like that, Right Now. He's harassing people who already have him blocked; you think he didn't find a way out of the Quarantine Zone if he's demonstrated boundary-violating behavior already?
My description is that in my room there may be people whom I prefer not to engage but may be tolerated by others in my room: Mute. For those intolerable to me, they must be shown the door: Block
If everyone tells you they aren’t come to your party if Jesse is there, and they tell you explicitly why, then you’d be crazy to choose Jesse over everyone else. Sounds like a terrible party!
Same works for blocking someone. If someone random walks up to me and starts screaming nonsense, I am not obliged to listen to them. Yet, somehow they think I am.
Damn right! And if that guy is leaving the party he's at telling his buddies, "Hey, let's go ruin that other guy's party" then as the party host you are entirely allowed to say, "fuck you. You are not invited"

I usually just mute the lists instead of block. It’s funny to see when they pile on a comment but also very easy to ignore it when it happens.
