Given that he apparently did report hearing voices, its also worth thinking about how studies show that the delusions people with mental illness develop reflect their culture. Seems like immersion in right wing media and developing violent delusions go hand in hand.

There's some of that too. When my sister developed severe mental illness her delusions included a deep kinship with a particular tree, that she could put a team together to solve all injustice, and that she's an empath constantly feeling the deaths of past lives. People like that are less newsworthy

I don't even know if I'd call some of that mental illness. Feeling kinship with a tree seems far more normal than hating a stranger because of the color of their skin or the country they were born in.

Hard to tell where it begins and ends when someone tells you they're going to sit with their tree because they've had too many heart attacks and strokes today. But that's what I'm saying, she is a kind person who consumed media of a certain type and that reflected. He consumed hate and violence...
