So many great examples of exactly this. Another favorite: Andrew J. Robinson hired for a one-off on DS9 as Garak, kills it, and becomes one of the series' emblematic characters.

I think about this with General Martok as well. I didn't know they'd bring him back when Worf and Garak went to find Tain, but I'm so glad they did because having another Klingon to pair with Worf and Sisko was brilliant. It especially made Worf a better character.

Shran was also originally a one-off but Combs again killed it, so they made him recurring, then one of Archer's best friends, and had plans to make him a full cast member if ENT had gotten a 5th season

Feels like Deep Space Nine is having a slight resurgence and reevaluation within the fan base. Yeah it's not the same show as TOS or TNG nor is it like the movies, but in an era of streaming, the mix of half serialized and half episodic plays really well (not to mention the show is awesome as hell).

Apparently, Jeffery Combs was the runner-up for the role of Riker. Johnathan Frakes remembered him fondly from the auditions, so he cast him as a one-off character in the episode Meridian (which he directed) Naturally, he fucking crushed it.

Now he's a franchise staple, like Clint Howard.

He killed a beloved character, then somehow became a beloved character. (Sort of.) It was a great character arc.

Also loved the tension and grudging mutual respect between him & Kira during the revolution, when she had multiple reasons to despise him forever. "Yeah, Damar, what kind of people..."

A recurring theme that definitely gets emphasized in the final 4-5 eps is how important things must change. That adhering to the past can doom the future. Like 4 factions all make huge cultural and leadership changes in those episodes and even Starfleet comes to terms a bit with its own darkness too

I love Jeffrey Combs so much. His ability to oscillate between calculating, curiosity, menace, faux affibility, awe/fear of being in the presence of the divine and sycophantic behavior (sometimes all in the same scene) was truly wonderful. I wish he got more work.

My favourite “oh no, they killed Weyoun!” “You bastards!” gag was when Worf and Dax were captured by the Cardassians. During their interrogation, Worf casually snaps Weyoun’s neck and Damar just looks down at the body and starts cackling.
