I think of remakes/remasters like what Ted Turner tried to do in the 80s, colorizing black and white movies. These older games were made for lower resolutions. It's part of their dna and their charm. "Improving" them is actually ruining them, and wastes energy that could make new art instead

Just bought it last night to laky to today. Very exciting to go back. The last time in was there and beat the game I kept getting. Red rings of death and had to wait a month to get ofnsole back. (Three times total) I got three red rings of death in a row, what a horrible launch). Lol

On the other hand, modern hardware/software can have trouble running old games.

I’d love to go back and play more KOTOR, Morrowind or Dragon Age Origins, but it sometimes it takes third party mods, utilities, or a guide online to get them to run on Windows 11 or from Steam.

If you have access to a Series console, you can technically still play those. Morrowind is even available via Game Pass.

(You’ll just be playing the Xbox Originals version of the first two, and none of them with mod support, so it’ll be far from ideal. Just possible.)

openmw runs Morrowind pretty much out of the box on modern hardware though it is under more of a pita than clicking play on steam

I’ve played OpenMW and enjoy it (a lot!), but it is a bit of an example of what I mentioned. It’s not a huge burden to get to run, but it is an extra step.

I’m all for remasters that make it easier to enjoy old media. I’ve bought so many games on Steam that I can’t actually get to run lol.

The Oblivion remaster is so funny because all of the old jank is still there in a shiny new coat of paint. Beautiful vistas where the roads leading up to them are at a 45 degree angle
