Totally agree. My husband had bowel cancer.At the hospital there was a specialist who gave a talk and the one thing that causes bowel cancer is nitrates. It’s difficult to digest. Found mainly in bacon and ham.We buy naked bacon and sometimes naked ham when we can.Trouble is nitrate is big business

What is it about bacon that makes it so bad? It’s cured pork I thought?
I have massively reduced my bacon consumption but I’m still not sure why bacon is so bad. What about the red meats eaten as part of Spanish diet - sliced with every beer you drink, are they as bad?

It’s the nitrates. Naked bacon (cured the old fashioned way salt) Parma ham is ok too. Nitrates is also sometimes found in pork pies and pates.

It might be the nitrates used to preserve the bacon so nitrate free bacon might be ok? But I don’t know, only guessing. I believe Parma ham is nitrate free.

I don’t think anyone will disagree that bacon is bad for you but this is clearly not a legitimate claim.

I’d like to see the data from the study that somehow worked out the bacon to cigarettes ratio.

There is a review of this claim on an old edition of BBC Radio 4's More or Less. Conclusion was that processed meats are in the highest category for certainty of carcinogenic properties but their effect is very low and only for rare cancers.

So they definitely slightly raise an already small risk.

I agree that bacon is bad for health, but specific assertions should be supported by quality evidence. Is this based on robust epidemiology, or the back of a fag packet calculation?
