the last time I was in NYC the people were friendly, open and kind. Meanwhile in my own town, Phoenix, Im afraid to get into a traffic confrontation or an argument in a grocery store for fear of being shot. without the guns, what would have been a terse exchange of words or fisticuffs becomes murder

As much as it is a real and deadly object, the gun is an ideological signifier. The relative silence over these shootings is the mark of its success at building a form of social cohesion. But that cohesion is internally contradictory and always risks falling apart into a kind of suicidal absurdity.

its because those pundits live in NYC and ride the subway—they have an obvious bias that when things might impact their lives, like “rich guy gunned down on NYC street”—its 5 alarm fire—people in Arizona might as well be “a remote island tribe” to those pundits

In a sense though NYC is a failed city. We have nowhere near the level of gun violence seen in the rest of the country. To a certain type of pundit that's definitely a violence failure on our parts.
