Although not as well known, I’d say the greatest debut of that era was Refused - New Noise, which gave birth to an entire genre. Without that song (and entire album’s influence), we wouldn’t have the 10 years or so of Screamo/Post-Hardcore.
Mr Brightside by The Killers is the funniest one because it was the first song they ever recorded as a band and it’s their most successful by an absolutely astronomical margin. Nothing else they’ve ever released comes close. Talk about peaking too early
I’m gonna put “That’s Alright Mama,” and “Love Me Do” and “Love Buzz” and “Don’t Stop Till Ya Get Enough” and probably 15 more ahead of it on the GOAT list, but I’m old.

I come from the '70s too, and I'm much more of a rock listener, but I remember the staggering impact and instant Britneymania.
Radiohead - Creep
Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe
Better, imo
Others might say;
The Doors - Break on through
The killers - Mr Brightside
Especially this line "my loneliness is killing me". Every teenager could relate to that.
I think his version.
It's still a while ago, but not quite 26 years lol
I never trust AI responses.
