USians are incredibly bad at understanding the fungibility of money. They will flip out at the prospect of a $1,000 annual tax increase to fund schools and social services but will simply shrug at paying $1,000/month for health insurance that might not cover everything.

Some money and services are marked "deserved" and some aren't, based on a mix of socio-polotical algorothms and vibes, and mixing the two is treated like a mortal sin.
