We need MIT, Princeton and Harvard to undertake a research project to mathematically and methodically get rid of the Trump Administration. Go big brains , go !
The problem: What if Trump refuses to provide the funds. The courts, courtesy of the SCOTUS immunity ruling, are basically irrelevant (including SCOTUS). So how do they get the funds?
It's going to be painful, and it wouldn't surprise me if layoffs end up happening. However, there are options to lessen the blow - stop renting & let people work from home, sell bonds, take out loans, etc. Hopefully donors of conscience will give more to research as well. Everything's on the table
There is, though I'm sure the minds at Harvard have been preparing for this eventuality for awhile now. Like I said, it's going to be painful, but there are places here and there to recover at least some of that money they're losing.
Exactly. And this is what I was afraid of for Harvard. Maybe the leadership of Harvard finally understood that this was the end game. They could capitulate over and over, and Trump would still find a way to deny them funding. The only logical action here is to resist.
Good point, but flooding the zone could backfire by amplifying him. Maybe targeted, high-impact counters work better. Which would be most effective: legal, rhetorical, or grassroots pushback?
This is nothing like what Harvard did. This is simply saying "we're mad about the loss of indirect costs & affronts to our int'l students". That's nothing like saying, "no, thank you, we don't want your federal funding." Maybe MIT's also crafting a letter like Harvard sent, but this ain't it.
Oh, please. They have a $15 billion endowment and they’re run by intelligent grownups who made an informed choice. Save your sympathy for the poor and sick and scared humans Trump is hurting. And please don’t shed a tear for Paul Weiss.
Yes! Go Harvard go! Once the phony propped up fear is gone Trump and Project 2025 lose power. The house of cards falls down. Appeasement does not work. They will always want to take more freedom. Wake up and stand up! We all stand up- we win!
Yes!!! Naively, I thought this is what Republicans would do back in 2017. Ya know, lock arms and not let him get away with his nonsense. Clearly, I was wrong.
I'm surprised the associations that represent big media, law and higher ed didn't serve as their heat shield. Couldn't they sue on behalf of the industries and use contributions to do it? Isn't that what they are for?
Except for Yale, which I hope gets turned
into a very large septic tank for the prison
we'll house this entire festering current
administration in after the Reign of Terror™
of course. But I've said too much already...
Honestly, what does that matter? There are still innocent people in El Salvadoran gulags. Major law firms are capitulating. Congress is doing nothing. Aside from Bernie and AOC, everyone is sitting on their hands. The American experiment is all but over.
The people and the institutions that do not stand upband fight back in this moment are aligning themselves with Trump's fascism. It's as simple as that. And we won't forget it.
We need MIT, Princeton and Harvard to undertake a research project to mathematically and methodically get rid of the Trump Administration. Go big brains , go !
Walt Whitman would be weeping (“i am large, I contain multitudes”), not to mention the Statue of Liberty, letting her lamp drop into the sea beside the “golden shore”—under Trump viewpoint diversity means stamp out diversity
Attack on the First Amendment! The ugly irony: Trump said Harvard "should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity" ...uh.. if it does not submit to his demands to make Harvard his "political entity."
Everything trump does in the name of making America great is only weakening the country and draining the pool of available knowledge and talent for the future. Bravo Harvard for pushing back on a bunch of bullies.
The University of Pennsylvania need to revoke his BSc degree in Economics, because A) it's obvious he knows sweet FA about the subject. B) On principle for attacking universities.
good, in a relative terms with colombia’s response. but we’re at participation trophies now if harvard is getting kudos for saying the government has no right to set its curricula or hire and fire professors
Yeh Harvard is right of course, but if it is against DEI, Trump doesn't care.
He really need to back off and calm down.
It is a total mess around the world now. Tariffs was one degree of hell, the mess with organizations in education, human rights and all other is another level. So far, Norway is 👍
Good for Harvard, but they needed a shake-up. A lot of them voted for Trump. I'm only mildly happy. They should suffer a little. Harvard Republican lawfirms are the one screaming the loudests at Trump, right now because they thought they were bulletproof like a CyberTruck. Sorry. #UNC

Harvard has 52 billion in their endowment fund. Losing 2 billion from the government isn't going to hurt them. Same with a lot of the other Ivy league universities. None of them are going to hurt if they lose government money. It's the small universities that are going to get hurt.
Keep in mind that to Donald Trump, "diversity" means Black People, and "woke" means Black People. His whole focus is getting even with the people he hates the most because Black People hate him as much. We have stood against his "kind" for 350 years and are still here, and we ain't going nowhere!
Harvard has some of the biggest brains on the planet, maybe they can figure out how the Trump monsters can be stopped and held accountable, since our politicians and legal system can’t seem to make it happen. 🤷🏻♀️💙
The COWARDICE of Many while our Country Slips Away From Us. Let us remember, and count how many times REPUBLICANS COULD HAVE STOPPED HIM !!!!! This act doesn't make them Heros, it makes them Patriots.
Harvard has been around longer than Trump, and indeed longer than the United States itself. The same can be said of Columbia, which sadly didn't tell Trump to fuck off when they had the chance.
The extortionist always returns for more. Universities and law firms should realize this.
The Nazi’s were able to succeed because there was little push back. We have already seen here that when we push back Trump pulls back. We must continue pushing back
We outside of the US are watching in complete disgust as the President is taking funding out of education systems unless they align with him, it is a complete disgrace and any college, board etc that doesn't stand up and say we wont be bullied will be on the wrong side of history.
Harvard resisted Trump's fascist efforts to destroy academic independence and the First Amendment, so he retaliated by ILLEGALLY cutting "$2 billion in research grants . . . including for space exploration, diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and tuberculosis."
Harvard graduates the slugs that keep poor people poor. Not sure how this affects me. I taught for 31 years in Texas with peanuts for pay. Harvard blokes knew this and supported this underpayment to keep me and other women poor. This doesn’t affect us. Let Trump have it.
The most important point is that Harvard is standing up to the authoritative actions of the Trump republican administration. For that at this time is what should be our focus and we should be thankful for it and rally around them with our support for their courage. Full stop!
Somebody has to put a stop to this would be emperor that tries to tell us what to think and what to do and could snatch people right off the street and send them to El Salvador. Kudos to Harvard for standing up to him.
Is their message understood?
How many more signs? How many more things that aren’t normal that have to happen to make people realize what’s really happening? Most of #America either doesn’t know or is in #Denial
Bravo, Harvard!!!
If it should ever come to that, I hope my Alma Mater hast the same cojones!
More institutions (not only colleges or university's) should take the same stance against the corrupt Trump administration.
Mafiosos MUST be squashed!!!
THANK YOU, HARVARD!!
Harvard & Gov. Janet Mills of Maine should have a
“ This is How You Do It” seminar ..
We desperately need Leaders..
AOC & Bernie could use the back ups..
We need to write to the Supreme Court Justices and demand they reverse their Immunity Decision. Millions upon millions of letters, emails, phone calls...
Hope I'm wrong but Harvard could be trolling. It hired the same lawyer who represented & negotiated Paul Weiss' capitulation ($40M in pro-bono services for Trump causes). https://finance.yahoo.com/news/meet-conservative-lawyer-helping-harvard-190214905.html Quinn Emmanuel is a good litigation firm but also the firm to go if you want a deal with Trump.
Sadly, Univ of New Mexico has caved to t-Rumps demands. Or rather the Project 2025’s plan to “de-liberalize” education and supplant it with Libertarian ideology.
That's the whole purpose of education, to expand your mind, learn, challenge theories with new ideas, critically think and form an educated opinion. You don't go their narrow your mind and be put in a box. Good for Harvard.
Good for Harvard!! This administration claims it wants to compel a change in how Jewish Americans are treated, yet totally disregard how black and brown Americans have been treated for years.
Trump is insane! Now he wants to take away funding. I love that they are fighting back at this complete nonsense. Let alone what Trump is doing to social security. The man is the worst a nero of our time.
When the current U.S. administration officials suspend such funding - i.e. hundreds of millions of $'s - would it be categorised as "savings"? Either then when it was suspended, or if it were later permanently with-held from the University?
why don't people start a go found me for universities that do not bend? I am sure a collective effort an "safe" those and has them keep their independence
This is what I'm hoping. Obviously there are some donors whose political ideology I find abhorrent. However, there are still plenty of wealthy people who have enough of a conscience to at least give more money specifically for research.
Depends on context. Harvard and Students Against Antisemitism Announced Settlement of Lawsuit. Harvard had to be sued and forced to stop violence against Jewish students. Harvards decisions are fear based, taking positions with the least risk of offending violent Palestinian rioters or of lawsuits.
It a start. Pushback from Universities is needed. Too bad the State of Florida has sold out their University system. Incoming Freshman thinking of a Florida school don't they are working with ICE to take your fellow students to death camps.
May these be the first of many. University leaders have been shamefully silent to this point, even those who haven't been complying in advance have otherwise been cowering. They need to line up behind Harvard, Cornell, and MIT now.
The depth of dishonor, failure & cruelty of current POTUS, VP & minions has no bottom. A stain on the honor of their families, their party, their communities and our nation. A convicted felon with a lifetime record of dishonor, bankruptcies and failed relationships is ruling #ProtectTheConstitution
Because they’re mostly on assignment / loan from various industry. Banking, law, real-estate, Most of them are innocuous stay out of the way kind folks and focus on memorializing pre-cooked matters presented by their handlers - just there for the post / title.
It’s the least they can do after handing Cruz, Pompeo, Cotton, Sasse, Crenshaw, Stefanik and DeSantis a degree without making them take and pass an ethics course. I can’t believe these 🤡s are Harvard grads.
This is a lesson that the Florida Government needs to be taught as well.
Constantly meddling and taking power away from local communities for their own benefit. It's sickening how Republican agents behave; trying to hide their tyranny behind silly "freedom" signs 🙄
They updated their website to highlight research contributions their folks have made. Harvard is a model of how colleges / universities should react to an extortion shake down by the Trump regime.
I’m glad they are standing there ground. But news to me that a university as rich in endowments as Harvard is getting Federal grants!?! Why are universities getting any subsidies from the government? Can someone with knowledge of where this money is spent at elite universities explain?
Grants are for specific research projects. This is how most research is funded; competitive grant money from government, or philanthropic foundations. Govt grants tend towards research with a greater good focus (broadly defined). This is not for operating costs but for specific research purposes.
Harvard has a 53+ billion dollar endowment that far exceeds yearly operating expenses. Harvard is also famous for paying it’s employees rock bottom wages, for barely meeting ADA accessibility guidelines and for bullying local real estate.
Harvard receives government funding so as not to dip into the ever growing endowment all while giving little back to the surrounding communities. I lived in Boston for 30 years. Interviewed 3x at Harvard. Said no 3x as their offer was 1/3 the rate for librarians. Took the MIT research lab job.
Fair enough. I’m in Australia. Used to work at one of the top unis in the country, also with lower rates of pay than many. The attitude seemed to be you should be grateful to work there.
You need to understand how endowments work, and how the vast majority of this money is from donors who specify exactly what they want their money going to. Harvard cannot simply dip into its endowment for anything it wants, otherwise they'd be breaking the law.
Endowments are like an investment account. They represent a secure financial resource that can be used to finance loans. Harvard, Yale, Princeton avoid loans in favor of public and foreign grants and “gifts”.
Like I said, Endowments can only be used for specific purposes, as agreed upon and signed via contract between Universities and donors. It's been like this forever, and is like this at every University that I'm aware of. But, yes, they can be used to finance loans and are most likely doing so.
Patronizing is not a viable debate tactic. Most Endowments are not absolute. The Trustees or admins of an endowment often may adjust terms. There are those that are absolute but they are few. Harvard guards its funds, preferring Fed and foreign grants.
Without giving away too much, all I can say is you're wrong. You may not believe it, but hopefully there are at least some people reading who will avoid spreading misinformation. I won't argue with you about it, though.
Ron DeSantis and Ben Sasse were the “test run” for total control of one of the largest Universities* in the USA, the University of Florida,— and American Theocratic Dictatorship.

They can not defy federal governance. The money is not there for them to do so.
No individual or institution in the country can stand up to federal power alone. it's noble and worthy, but it is meaningless.
The government just stopped visas at my alma mater. At this rate, who the fuck is seriously going to Come here to study? Rubio needs to fuck off

White privilege. Columbia should wise up because Trump will never support them and the demands will increase.
