Adjusting for inflation they were more expensive.... the bit they leave out is that people had far more disposable income back then so they could absorb the cost. So even though it may still be "Cheaper" now, its *affordability* is far worse.

I remember reading in the back of GamePro and Electronics magazines that had advertisements for games and consoles "Ship directly to home". And the retail price of the Neo Geo, the Phillips CDi and the 3DO were astronomical, 3DO topping out at $700 retail.

yeah back when i was a kid in the 80s and 90s getting a new game was a very special occasion kind of thing, usually reserved for birthday/holiday or you had to do something really good to justify it, like straight As for a whole semester or school year or something

I rarely see mention that the cost used to factor in they were all physical media, needed to be distributed to stores, including the case & a color printed booklet for each one plus print marketing.
Now it's primarily digital, sold on the platform's own online store, & they make extra from dlc

When I was a kid, the good NES games were usually $50 USD (apparently about $79 AUD (Arachnids Underfoot Dollars)), and at the time if we got one game a month we were lucky. Usually improvements in technology allow for prices to fall, not rise.

I remember that Perfect Dark 64 and the mandatory expansion pack was expensive as hell... But, that's an isolated case, I don't remember having difficulties buying games either. And when I was a kid, I bought them with pocket change I kept every week
