Every time I've visited NYC I've taken the Subway. Worst that ever happened is the night the 30 minute ride back to my hotel took 2 hours due to maintenance so it was 2am by the time I got back.
I was there 4th of July last year. I kid you not, there was a minivan that didn't get out of a cordoned area in time and it was just stuck until fireworks were over. In the middle of the street...
I love New York, partly because I hate driving. I find all the tropes to be false.
If I could afford to move to a city with good public transportation like NYC I would. I love Maine and it's natural beauty but having a visual impairment that prevents you from driving REALLY fucks you over here.
And pretty much anywhere in the south or Midwest too. I live within walking distance to 2 large grocery stores but there no safe walking route to either one. Or anything else where I live.
No. I've been to NYC a couple of times and we went everywhere by public transit. I didn't feel unsafe. The stations need to be upgraded, they are hot in the summer.
My Midwest self would not have wanted to drive there.
Have ridden the subway almost daily since I moved to NYC in 1985. Never had any problems. I have seen weird things and strange people but to each their own. As far as dirty, the system is open 24/7. Not the cleanest, but the cars aren't horribly filthy.
I imagine. This is not a posh airport express or Shinkansen. I live in Hamburg Germany. Smaller, but a tiny bit similar. Not 24/7, but the trains get used a lot during the day. No big problem.
It's extremely safe. Lots of riders just minding their own business. The times you interact with other people are only occasional and generally involve someone begging or someone selling candy.
No it’s not. You have to be aware of your surroundings, as in any major city. I went to NYC last Fall and with 3 other old white ladies and we all rode the subway all over with zero issues. We never once felt unsafe in NYC including at night.
I don’t live there, only visited, but I use the subway every time. It’s a slice of all walks of life for sure, but I’ve never felt unsafe. I actually like the vibe. Makes me feel like I get to be part of the city while I’m there.
Spent all of last week in NYC riding the subway everywhere. It was pretty clean and devoid of homeless people and crackheads. Felt safe enough as a single female to ditch the friends and go exploring on my own the last day. This old southern lady thought it was like Disney for adults. He’s BS.
It might feel unsafe if you have a fear of people who don’t look like you. Or have a fear of listening to other languages. Or perhaps need assigned seating and first on access. Just a guess though.
No! The whole claim is false. Not a shred of evidence for it. It’s based solely on watching fictional movies about NYC in the 1970s.
NYC has already spent huge amounts of money to placate these evil fuckers the Republicans, including putting cops everywhere. The claim is obviously false.
It’s the best way to get around NY. It can be hot, loud, crowded oh … and “multi-cultural” … which is threatening to MAGA. It’s not unsafe.
Per capita, safer than Bakersfield.
The population of NY is no more crazy, violent than average.
Because it’s so large, the raw numbers can be for fear bait.
The one & only time I was in NYC was Fleet Week '09. I rode the subway, quite inebriated, in my whites, from Times Square to Battery Park/Staten Is. Ferry, to get back to the ship.
Got there safely, whites still white (except the shoes, but that's a different story). Would def go again, but sober. 😉
It is relatively safe, compared to driving. NYers leave people alone on the train. It's not dirty, not like it was in the 70s. It is very loud, which is why I'd rather walk when I'm in the City. But for speed or longer distances, you can't beat it.
IIRC, when Bloomberg was mayor he rode the subway to work most days. Granted it's been 20+ years since I lived in NYC, but I found the subway easy and safe to use.
Bloomberg, a billionaire, did indeed ride the subway to work. It's just faster than a car. That's one of the lowkey pleasures of taking the train - you will see a movie star sitting next to a vagrant next to a tourist from Katmandu next to someone bringing a couch home from IKEA.
It definitely needs to be cleaner and much more accessible. When I go to London or Paris I feel such jealousy and Tokyo is apparently even better. But it is not a Mad Max Killing Field.
Tokyo by all accounts is pretty pristine in comparison to most.
Good for them!👏🏻🫶🏻✌🏻
That still makes Donnie & CO’s words and actions seem just what they are tho: vindictive small men wrecking what they would and haven’t ever needed.
Spoiling stuff others need, out of spite.
I live in a touristy neighborhood and one of my little pleasures in life is to offer help to tourists, who always look completely flummoxed by nobody yelling at them.
I imagine he’s one of those people who will only feel safe if the train is resegregated and there are special first class cars where he will never have to lay eyes on anyone who isn’t a wealthy white guy.
It’s fine, it’s just a common trope for Fox News to make any large city sound like absolute hell to their viewers, despite the studio being in Manhattan.

Anyone who lived there in the 1980s will tell you how safe it is today (and clean, by comparison!).

Petty small men.
