“The energy storage system (ESS) at over 40MWh will be four times larger than any battery installation that has been constructed and installed anywhere in the world for the marine transport environment. … The electrical system integration is by Wärtsilä and ESS by Corvus Energy.”
The Dolphin NextGen system represents a significant advancement in maritime battery technology. It utilizes nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) chemistry and cylindrical cells, arranged in a stacking configuration that optimizes space and reduces weight.
“The batteries powering the world’s largest battery-electric Ro-Pax ferry, Hull 096, are produced by Corvus Energy, a Norwegian company specializing in marine energy storage solutions. Specifically, Corvus is supplying its Dolphin NextGen battery system for this vessel .”
That makes sense. Fascinating how this information is hard to find because it’s not relevant to most news channels. And production chains are so complex that it is easy for companies to only publish the information they want people to know.
That's true. And I don't want to argue Vs batteries, but that Europe still does not produce batteries, PV cells, semiconductors, chips is heartbreaking because the very (litography etc) machines to produce this stuff come mostly from Europe.
ASML lithography machines 🇳🇱 are used in semiconductor manufacturers and foundries in Europe, like STMicroelectronics in 🇫🇷 & 🇮🇹 , Infineon Technologies in 🇩🇪 , and NXP Semiconductors in the 🇳🇱 . Maybe battery production doesn’t make sense yet because the manufacturing ecosystem isn’t here in Europe?
Batteries are a good fit for ferries. Short routes, long port docking stretches that can be used for charging. Batteries at this juncture are not a good fit for container shipping.
H2 will come, one day - or at least it should if it doesn't get locked out by lack of will or motivation to adapt. It has some serious advantages over battery, particularly weight.
Battery & storage is on a seperate dev & roll-out curve to H2. Your guess is as good as mine. I have no money riding on it so I haven't done any closer investigation.
