If you ever drive in low-traction conditions, for decades Subaru was _the_ non-SUV (and thus vastly more efficient) choice. But the last 5-10 years have really left them in the dust.

I said like 6 years ago that the best thing Subaru could do was absolutely lead the pack in EV deployment. Was and still am shocked at their lack of EV inventory and lack of plan.

Clearly AWD on every vehicle adds to the lackluster gas mileage. The smaller ones (Impreza & Crosstrek) do a bit better. I drive a Kia e-Niro in the Northeast and have no trouble in the snow. FWD only. No complaints.

A lot of them are standard 2wd, and the dual motor is optional: the Ioniqs, VW ID.4, Ford Mach E, Chevy Blazer, and I think the BMW i4 and Polestar 2 are all like that

My guess is that for the people who live out in the country, or in more rural areas, there is very little good infrastructure for electric vehicles, plus many houses have to often have their electricity systems remodeled in order to be able to charge it at home. Thus reluctance on design, perhaps?

Subaru iirc had better relative gas mileage ~20 years ago, and if you live out in the mountain west sometimes you do need 4wd and chains. and a chain wench in the back etc

less granola car than a "got a jeep stuck on an unpaved mountain road" car

maybe coasting on prior reputation a bit now
