Bluesky still hasn’t reached that critical mass where you can rely on it for local breaking news … but X has been drained of all humanity and chronology so it’s fallen off there too.

I find it working in my local area. Maybe you should reach out to your local businesses and politicians and reporters and tell them to join Bluesky. Then also, if you are able to, subscribe to local media to support local reporting.
One of the few things that I liked about Twitter long before its rapid decline was the ability to follow local journalists and broadcasters for the latest news. Hopefully many more will join BS so we can have that option here.
So it will be more difficult to do this with how bluesky is set up with it's decentralized layout. The best thing you can do is likely follow any journalists on bluesky, or accounts that engage with the local newspaper until they have their own. We get out what we put into this platform.
Breaking news and customer support were two of the best things about twitter before they wrecked it, and nothing has filled that gap yet. All that progress just driven off a cliff by one egomaniac.
Bluesky really needs to make a concerted push for businesses to get on here and add the link/logo to their websites. Heart sinks when all they have are IG and X logos in the footer.
100% agree. Think there is an element of cowardice from some news organisations or large companies. It's almost like taking a political stand against Musk, Trump admin.
There was a point … years and years ago … when Facebook and MySpace went all in on getting their logos EVERYWHERE. Any venue, shop, plumber’s van, anything, within a short space of time they were on there, as vital as a phone number or URL.
Anyway, all of this because a whole bunch of sirens and flashing lights have just rocketed past and the only way to find out what’s happening is to wait for the news later today, much like in Victorian times.
I had a similar experience last year, before moving across to Blue sky. An apprentice in the office immediately looked at a local reddit thread, and the answers were there... Obviously I immediately felt old.
Of course I … *snigger* … I could check a local … sorry … local news website because … no wait I can do this … local news websites are so good BWAHAHAHAHAHA
Other than small businesses that only have an FB page, I can't recall the last time I sought out a company FB, Insta, or similar page for personal reasons.
It was definitely a thing at one point; but now I just don't care - do they have a website? If not, I probably move on to find a competitor.
Same, but if I needed to make contact with a company, the twitter account would always be my first click. Often much faster and friendlier than whatever other customer support they had in place.
I'm quite content w/ the performance in both categories on bluesky. People complain about the speed of breaking news, but I've found that I am informed just as quickly as I was on the other site.
True. Breaking news is a bit of a weakness for bluesky - twitter used to be the first place I got news of celebrity deaths and breaking news. Would be good if that could be improved. The MSM is very slow.
It will improve with more people. I did find out about the United Airlines crash here on Bluesky about 10 minutes after it happened, tho. It is improving
Yeah, it’s good for the big news, but at one point twitter was great for simple local stuff. I guess it’s just a case of getting enough people on here.
Yeah I'm getting rather impatient. I still spend too much time on Twitter now and it is NOT because I enjoy it, but because there's still more info there than here.
This used to be true but many independent & msm news has made its way here—both overall accounts & individual journalists. If you need help locating some, I could help out but many are listed in related lists/starter packs, which there’s a directly of them in case you didn’t know.

under the desk news is great.
Can we get better news feeds here on Bluesky? I still find myself checking Twitter because that feed is better at news.

Or maybe I'm a cynic.
Almost.

I wish more people just posted to both.
