I'm an undergrad in history and it worries me that some of my peers use these tools to avoid engaging with the material. I never use them and sometimes it feels like I might be at a disadvantage compared to those people if the professor or TA can be fooled.

tbh I think the source analysis and media literacy are more important than ever with AI generated content etc, so you'll be advantages imo. I'm in the humanities and I actually do use LLMs, but only for small Python scripts and Excel formulas, never for knowledge acquisition.

I suspect that, for a lot of them, university isn't something they chose so much as "what's next" after HS, and they probably rationalize it by thinking that essays and reading are just BS they need to wade through in order to get a degree, none of it being skills they'll ever actually need.

I work in a university and yes that is the attitude of today’s undergraduate students. In my role I focus on graduate students because I find them more rewarding to work with—many of them are still there for the right reasons and they put a lot of effort in while juggling careers, family, etc.

Having just taught a first-year English class in a western Canadian university, my experience has been more nuanced. My course was designed for quizzes with a lot of writing by hand. I caught only one student with a GPT paper this term, though I know other instructors had more problems.

And the students know they will have to write the final exam by hand at the beginning of the term, so they know GPT won't help them prepare. They accept the process of writing their own papers, starting with short essays by hand, and developing them into full papers. This is our class motto.

I don't see it as much, but some buddies of mine will tell me stories that make me fear for the future. Some people can't even answer an opinion essay without using ChatGPT.
