oh, hell, I just can't cancel Amazon. I'm old, I live where the air hurts my face, I have multiple mobility issues. Delivery to my door makes my life livable. First world issues, I know.
I cancelled everything else! But I’m having a hard time with that one. But I’ll do it. If anything, it’ll help me spend less. 🤷🏻♀️But I do enjoy Prime Video… Netflix and Max will have to do.
I'm done with Facebook, I'm done with TikTok, Amazon is next. Oh, and I'm giving up my Sam's Club membership for Costco. It's so much further from my home, but I will stand by companies who will not be pressured into changing their current DEI policies! Way to go, Costco! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Etsy, other smaller business retailers or bigger retailers that didn’t support Orange man. Target, Costco. Also, if you use audible, your local library likely has an app you can use for free books and audiobooks! I’ve been using it and have read so much! FOR FREE!
For those that are generally decent companies (Bob's Red Mill, for instance), I've been contacting/emailing them. Who knows, especially for those that overall seem to be decent companies. I'll see what they say.
Try your local library. You can't purchase the books available, but you can download the print version. I download the audible versions. The best part is it's free.
Yes-libby is very easy to use. I have already downloaded and read 2 books in the past 2 weeks. I had previously been hesitant but it couldn’t have been easier.
Y’all are inspiring me to stop dragging my feet and delete delete delete! Haven’t used any Meta or purchased on Amazon since Sunday - tough habits to break but already noticing less/more mindful spending and better connection to my local community.
I quit in November, it is wonderful. I live in an area with few shopping options so I purchase more intentionally and local. It is a little bit of work but not a big deal, I always feel great buying from a real person. Independent toy stores are the best!!!!
I did it last month. I've ordered business supplies through amazon regularly. I found alternatives, like contacting vendors directly through their own site or ordering from other suppliers. I canceled my Amazon Prime membership also.
Can't cancel but I have cut way, way back to only necessary materials. As a disabled Senior with severe medical issues, I depend on delivery. My groceries and meds are delivered by my grocery store and drug store. Not Amazon. Hard to keep costs down but I'm trying to stay on top of it
I can't back myself into corners, but what I HAVE done is cancel Amazon Prime, and I spend very little there now. I also got rid of Spotify, Twitter/X, Facebook, and probably other things I'm not remembering now.
I am boycotting Fascist/Nazi Bezos but for grocery shopping it is hard because we go to our local Wholefoods and he owns it. We get so many discounts there. Any suggestions, this is for LA COUNTY, CA.
No, my disabled wife does a lot of her shopping through Amazon. I am, however, personally reducing my Amazon purchases as much as I can and I have been buying from local stores when I can.
Let Amazon know why you are reducing your shopping dollars with them. Even if you can't delete all the way until there's alternatives, drastic reduction in spending does make a difference too as long as you let Amazon know
They don’t care when one person reduces or stops buying from them. They will understand when many do the same. I am simply a grain of sand on a vast beach. However, thousands of grains of sand can stop the mightiest machine.
did that three years ago. So many great small businesses I have found since then. Their quality is much better, people are easier to deal with if there is an issue, and the stuff is unique many times too. Even some of the usual on Amazon you can get directly from the company that sells it!
They take an average of 50% of every sale, so it's usually easy to find more competitive pricing elsewhere, often locally. Last 'free shipping' order I placed took 3 weeks, so no value there, either. Prime streaming content certainly isn't enough to justify it. Closed account last year. Not missed.
Just remember there was a time you lived without it and were completely fine! You can I’ve without it now, too. It’s sick how they make it so addicting, though. There are alternatives! Etsy being one. And you support a small business while you’re at it. It’s for the greater good 🙏
So far I have deleted all my subscriptions and set them up with Chewy, Costco, etc. I’ve still been using the app for search and ratings, but making the purchase directly somewhere else. I need to figure out digital books next…
If you have an iPhone, iBooks is GREAT. You can apart check out digital books from the library—and read them—on Libby. Barnes & Noble has the Nook, which isn’t awesome but works.
Thanks! I’ll check them out. I have quite a library with them from way back in the day, but I stopped using them because I couldn’t get the titles I wanted a majority of the time.
So I have that issue with some authors too. It’s getting better. So when they don’t have a book digitized, I purchase the book. Your library will download automatically, as you know. It was hard to migrate from paper books to digital. now I enjoy the bigger fonts 😂
Some is better than none to start. I actually donated all my physical books a couple years ago. I’m ride or die for the ebooks now. The adjustable fonts size, mood lighting and cheater-free reading on my side before bed. I’m a tragedy.
Thanks! I have Libby but I like to purchase when I can, I’m privileged and want to support the authors as much as I can.
Apple is another can of worms. 🤦♀️ Tim Cook was right there next to the other tech bros at the inauguration. Same with Sundar (Google).
So “afraid”. I worked for Meta and Google. They ”pretend” their hands are tied by the market, investors, policy, etc. A convenient excuse to justify terrible choices in service of the stock price (aka their incentives). It’s performative BS, they have real power. “If they wanted to they would.”
Thanks! I’ll check them out. I have quite a library with them from way back in the day, but I stopped using them because I couldn’t get the titles I wanted a majority of the time.
Thanks. I’ll check them out. I’m gonna work on the DRM bit. As a GenXer I’m hella tired of having to buy the same thing multiple times in a different format. 😢
Definitely not. (Although you can purchase from Chewy through Amazon.) They are owned by a European Private Equity firm. BC Partners, who also owns PetSmart.
Not sure. I use the Kindle App on an iPad. (Definitely not the same as the e-ink of a Kindle reader.) All tablets should support the various Apps for each of the alternative providers or you can use the browser. The Kindle does support other file types, so may support some non-Amazon books.
Haven’t ordered a thing from Scamazon since Jeff Bozos nixed the Harris endorsement at WAPO. Haven’t missed them at all. If Costco doesn’t have what I want, I try Target and then Walmart.
Yup. Waiting till the 'script is up though. Used to be you could cancel ahead of time and get credit. I didn't see that option now. Paid for...so I will use it till it's up. Have the date marked on the calendar. ( NEVER shop at Whioe Foods, so that's all good.)
Did that months ago.
I cancelled twitter years ago.
Off of FB/IG currently---but REALLY miss the IG knitting.
(cause what other reason is there to be there?)
Ended Prime, ended Goodreads, ended Threads, ended twitter (except for an account I haven't used in over a decade and I have no idea what the password is.)
I'll end Instagram as soon as I archive what I have there.
I am debating…. They are holding all the moves I have purchased on Prime Video hostage. I spend a LOT of money there buying my favorite movies. If I close my account I lose all of them. Ugh.
So for now I have just stopped buying anything from Amazon at all…. 😐
I quit FB and Twitter long ago. I just recently deactivated my Instagram account. Never posted anything, just enjoyed various content. I admit, I’m missing it a little but not too much. Now I need to figure out how to online shop to reduce my Amazon dependence. Any ideas?
I have been thinking about it since Monday. I want to cx but disabled and dependent on it. No other way. I have to work in different directions. Please you all do it!!!
Yes and thanks for input I can look at using less if I can afford it but I do other work partly political. I am pain advocate. I would be fine and not disabled if DEA Would not say what we can have in combination with others.dont have an elective surgery unless you say you will not have IV Tylenol
Target closed. Costco I do not believe we have. Isn’t that a club like BJ
Walmart I boycotted yrs ago. I will not use it for anything. I have certain items I can only get in Amazon too. I use Aldi for food. I am off of anything suckenberg etc. moving to HI too and Bezo & Walmart is it there
Did it. I have one more month of Audible and I am DONE. Prime is basically unwatchable.
I’d rather support local businesses and fuck Jeff Bezos too. Billionaires should not exist!
I haven't canceled my Amazon account (yet), but I've started using alternatives like Barnes and Noble for books. I'm still looking for another source for non-book-related items.
I did that a LONG time ago. If you must order in line, most businesses have their own website. Why go through Amazon?
But why not get out of the house and go shopping? Stimulate your community!
Yes, I’m planning to close my Amazon account. I miss physical toy stores having to pay so much for shipping just to get toys is ridiculous. It’s time to support alternatives.
I have been consciously ordering products directly from their websites whenever possible and going into physical stores to purchase as much as possible.
I’ll be working my way up to that. For now I’ve taken the Amazon CC out of my wallet and I’ll be switching to other cards for scheduled purchases. Anyone recommend any CC companies that are less horrible? Especially if low fee and supporting humanitarian causes?
Join your local credit union and get a credit card through them. Actually, join your local credit union for all banking. Personal service, higher interest rates paid, and usually zero fees.
Haven't done WalMart in YEARS, been considering Amazon, but they do have a number of small businesses they support, as well employ a lot of people around here, so cut back instead
But Target? That sucks! I get a lot of last minute stuff there!
I am seriously thinking about it, but it’s hard. I will try to buy local more this year. I don’t want to go to TEMU or Alibaba, both Chinese owned due to the security risks and vulnerability! I have started buying my books local - and that’s a lot! I recently bought Converse direct!
I want to soooo badly. But, I NEED their delivery service. I have no permanent address, and sometimes, Amazon is the ONLY place I can get things I need. When we visit small, rural areas, there are no stores for dozens of miles. I mean, like 50-60 miles...Amazon saves me.
This is true. I was shocked when I learned how near impossible it was to completely untether from Google or Amazon. I don't think most users have a clue what a monolithic maze of tentacles they both are.
Dude. It's SO EASY. I don't mean to brag (but I'm about to), but I stopped spending money on Bezos-related businesses in 2019. No Amazon, no Prime, no WAPO, no Whole Foods, and when the medical place I used was bought by Amazon, I left and got a refund. It's possible people. Do it!
#leaveamazon
I fully realize I'm one person & folks are gonna say it doesn't matter. But it matters to me! I can't stand the thought of giving that asshole anything. I also fully realize I don't mind paying a few dollars more for things. I know I'm lucky I can do that.
even if amazon doesn’t miss your money, if you shop local, the stores you support will notice and appreciate the bump. you’ll also be helping your local economy as well, because when you shop local, more of that money stays and circulates locally.
I ordered a book for Christmas. $25. The book came and I was getting ready to wrap it. I turned it over and a sticker on the back said Value Village 7.95. I was charged $25.
I squawked. They quickly said keep the book no charge.
This is how they operate now.
Slowly moving away from Amazon. living in the middle of BC where shopping is limited is the pits but Amazon is to big and antiUnion. I guess PeaveyMart and carhart will be my fashion choice from here on...

Yeah I’d lose what’s in Kindle unless I keep the account open or export my books and rip the DRM off them but I think it’s worth it.
The days of Amazon being everyone’s quick shopping app need to end. I’ll buy less and pay more locally from now on.
Removing it isn't terribly hard if you have a technical background, but could be difficult if you do not.

Bezos is such a douche. His girlfriend is gross AF. And he’s a trump toady.
(P=Pile) has free shipping, you can bet the supplier pays for it.
A multi-billionaire POS squeezing margins so he can become richer while the real value add gets screwed is exactly who this scum really is.
Hard working people deserve better than a thief stealing from them.
I hope your post keeps getting lots of attention, and encourages others to cancel as well!
Target
They also deliver. There's quite a few alternatives out there.
TODAY IS TOTAL PAIN

And joining Costco.
Any meta product too. It should be massive and coordinated. It’s the only thing they’ll respond to.
There may not be much one person can do, but if we all keep our money from these mammonist plutocrats, we may just have a chance.
But Target? That sucks! I get a lot of last minute stuff there!
monthly subscriptions!!

Amazon beside local vendors?
I squawked. They quickly said keep the book no charge.
This is how they operate now.
I still need prime too
