I'm not sure what Ford is doing is even legal. There are pretty strict standards to sell on the American electricity market.

You may be right. That said, Ontario is doing it. What Trump is doing isn’t legal either using that standard, he’s breaking the USMCA. But, that’s not stopping the USA either. I’m not so worried about the legal question, even if Ont has to pay it back later it’s a strong political response.

Yes, it surprised me as well, it will be seen as aggressive but whatever he is going to do whatever he wants anyway and make tons of cash for his billionaire friends. We deserve the increased dollars from tariffs too.

There are constitutional implications as provinces cannot do certain things that impact international commerce. Especially they cannot implement tariffs.

I don't quite understand what Ontario is doing. And theie statements are vague.

Thanks Lyle. I agree they aren't "tariffs" in strictly speaking terms. It's technically a price hike that probably violates some power purchasing agreements between Ontario's utility and its customers in the USA.

I think you nailed it. This is all politics. I doubt it will end up in court despite violating agreements unless challenged by the affected parties.

Best recent example was New Brunswick "deporting" Canadians including non resident New Brunswickers back to Maine during COVID. 100% unconstitutional but was a popular measure so few wished to go to court.
