I don't live anywhere near this, the location of the building doesn't affect me, but it does seem like they're prioritizing a surface parking lot over greenspace. I imagine the hospital decided the loss of so many parking spaces was too much to bear.

It’s a HOSPITAL, their staff works weird overnight shifts, they need the lot. Also, it is their land. It was always intended to be used to expand the Royal campus.

Not saying they don't need the parking, but a surface parking lot isn't great land use so it's strange to prioritize it over greenspace.

The collapsed parking garage downtown had 400 parking spaces in the same area as the this parking lot has 91. A parking garage could replace all that parking.

Maybe there's a way to keep the green and have the clinic there, too? Why not both? Treatment is essential, for sure. So is our environment. I think most people would agree that the city does a weak job on green space, even relative to peers in Canada or in the world. We rely mainly on NCC.

Not only does staff need parking, so do people visiting patients and eventually MPH residents.

Given how few mental health facilities there are in this end of Ontario, some people travel 100's of kms to visit friends or loved ones at the ROH. Those people do need access to parking.

No, I'm sorry, just look at this. It's basic. The parking lot in question is less than 100 meters away, but instead they need to cut trees? No. This is planning and architectural praxis. Put it on the parking lot, wall off the green space, and make it exclusive to the use of the new building.

Am I missing something? You say they "don't want supportive housing [...] near them" but their proposal is to continue to build the shelter but instead using the parking lot directly adjacent to the greenspace. Seems less like "not in my neighborhood" and more like "a little to the left please"

Doesn't matter in this conversation. I'm not suggesting the alternative proposal is good. It may be horrible, but that doesn't excuse spreading misinformation about the proposal and its authors. If Ariel stated the proposal was bad because we need parking that would be a different conversation.

That said, I agree with the overall sentiment that it seems like "caring about greenspace" is often weaponized in bad faith to shut down undesirable changes and that's something we should definitely avoid. I just don't see this example as being in that situation.

I can't help but want it all. Resources for people in need and more green space.
I can't help but wonder if a facility surrounded by trees would be better for those seeking treatment then one surrounded by concrete and cars

Hampton Park (a City-owned greenspace) is a 2-minute walk from this proposed site.

I imagine a lot the hospital is going to keep a lot of the trees on site to ensure some separation between the facility and the backyards of the people saying that they aren't NIMBYs.

The mature trees in that park that die will not be replaced with new ones. All Ottawa urban green spaces are slowly deteriorating ☹️
